Thomas & Betts 2680 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cord diameter ranges do the Thomas & Betts 2680 series 90 degree cord connectors cover?
Four cord ranges are offered, each tied to a specific hub thread: 0.125 to 0.275 inch on a 3/8 inch thread, 0.250 to 0.400 inch on a 1/2 inch thread, 0.560 to 0.690 inch on a 1 inch thread, and 0.770 to 0.895 inch on a 1 inch thread. Measure the actual outside diameter of the cord jacket, not the conductor gauge, and pick the range that brackets it. A cord outside its range will not seal or grip properly.
2) Is the hub thread on these cord grips NPT or metric?
NPT. The hub threads are tapered pipe thread, so they land straight into a standard NPT-tapped box, hub, or enclosure opening, in 3/8, 1/2 and 1 inch sizes depending on which cord range you order. If your enclosure is drilled for metric cable gland thread, these are not the right connector.
3) Can I use a 90 degree cord connector in a Class I Division 2 area?
Yes, within limits. These cord connectors are suitable for hazardous locations where general purpose equipment is specifically permitted by the NEC: Class I Div 2, Class II Div 1 and 2, and Class III Div 1 and 2, referencing NEC 501-4(b), 502-4(a)(b) and 503-3(a)(b). They are not a substitute for an explosionproof fitting where the code calls for one in Class I Div 1.
4) Why pick a 90 degree cord connector instead of a straight one?
The elbow body turns the cord immediately at the enclosure, so you use it where a straight grip would force the cord into a tight bend against a wall, a floor, or an adjacent panel. It keeps the cord from kinking at the point of entry and lets you run it flat along a surface. If you have clearance in line with the hub, a straight cord grip is the simpler choice; the 2680 series is the 90 degree elbow version.
5) Will a plastic cord grip hold up outdoors in winter?
The body is polyamide (nylon) rated from -34 to +105 degrees Celsius, so cold-weather exterior and unheated-space work is within the rating. The upper end also covers hot equipment rooms and motor connections. For marine and dockside work, these meet Coast Guard CG293.
6) Will these cord grips damage the jacket on an SO cord under strain?
No. The gripping element is a segmented chuck that closes evenly around the jacket, which gives high mechanical pullout resistance without cutting or crushing the cord jacket. That is what makes them usable on flexible portable cord feeding equipment that gets pulled on.
7) Are Thomas & Betts 2680 cord connectors UL listed and CSA approved?
Both. They carry UL file E13938 and CSA approval, which is normally what a plant or institutional electrical inspector wants to see on a cord entry fitting.
