Thomas & Betts 4970NM – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cord diameter range do the Thomas & Betts 4970NM and 4971NM 90 degree cord connectors accept?
Two ranges cover the pair. The 4970NM takes cord from 0.125 to 0.375 inch outside diameter; the 4971NM picks up from 0.310 to 0.560 inch. They overlap between 0.310 and 0.375 inch, so a cord measuring in that band works with either. Measure the cable jacket OD, not the conductor size, before you pick.
2) Is this cord connector UL listed?
The 4970/4971 cord connector carries UL file E13938 and CSA 52391, so it is acceptable for both US and Canadian installations.
3) Why use a 90 degree cord connector instead of a straight one?
The elbow body turns the cord immediately at the enclosure wall, so you aren't fighting a cord that wants to stand straight out and then bend sharply. The gland nut on the 4970/4971 is built to restrict cable bending at the exit, and the overall size is reduced so it fits where a straight grip plus a bend radius won't. Use a straight grip where you have clearance in front of the hub; use the 90 where the cord has to run along the wall or down a tight chase.
4) Does this cord grip provide strain relief, or do I still need a separate clamp?
Strain relief is built in. The 4970/4971 grips the cord jacket as the gland nut is tightened, which is what holds the cord against pull and keeps tension off the terminations inside the box. No separate cord clamp is required.
