Blackburn LCN4-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Blackburn LCN4-12 lug take?
The LCN4-12 is sized for 4 AWG conductor. It is a copper compression lug, so it is meant for copper cable at that size and gets crimped onto the conductor rather than set screwed.
2) Will the Blackburn LCN4-12 bolt to a 1/2 inch stud on my bus bar?
Yes. The tongue is punched for 1/2 inch stud size, so it lands on a 1/2 inch bolt or stud at a panel, bus bar, or ground bar. It is a two hole tongue, so the pad needs two 1/2 inch holes on the standard spacing, not a single stud.
3) Can I use the LCN4-12 copper lug on aluminum conductor?
No. It is a copper bodied lug for copper conductor. For aluminum cable you need a connector rated AL9CU or an aluminum bodied compression lug in the same 4 AWG size, otherwise you have a dissimilar metal termination that will not pass inspection.
4) What is the difference between a long barrel lug and a standard barrel lug?
A long barrel lug like the LCN4-12 has an extended crimp barrel that takes more crimps along its length, which is what utility and substation specs usually call for on pull out and vibration. A short or standard barrel copper lug terminates the same 4 AWG copper conductor with fewer crimps and is the common choice for general panel and equipment work. If your drawing does not specifically call for long barrel, either will land the cable.
5) Does the grey color on the Blackburn LCN4-12 mean anything for crimping?
The grey is the die color code on the barrel. Compression lug manufacturers color code the barrel so the crew can match the lug to the correct die and number of crimps in the field. Match the grey code on your hydraulic or battery crimper die chart rather than eyeballing it.
6) Is a two hole lug required, or can I use a single hole one?
Two hole tongues are specified where the termination has to resist rotation under fault or vibration, which is why they are standard on grounding and service equipment landings. The LCN4-12 gives you that two hole pattern at 1/2 inch stud size. A single hole lug on the same 4 AWG copper works where the equipment pad only has one tapped hole, but it can turn under torque.
7) Is the Blackburn LCN4-12 sold individually or in a bag?
It sells each, one lug per unit, under manufacturer part number LCN4-12. Order the count you need for the job rather than assuming a bagged quantity.
