OATEY 1046ABN-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey Dearborn 1046ABN-1 trap connect to 1-1/2 inch tubular drain piping without glue or solder?
Yes. The Dearborn 1046ABN-1 is a 1-1/2 inch P-trap with slip joint connections on both ends, so it slides onto 1-1/2 inch tubular tailpiece and waste arm and seals with the nut and washer. No solvent weld, no soldering. Two nuts and two rubber washers come in the box, so the trap itself is ready to go once the tailpiece and wall tube are cut to length.
2) What does the "offset" mean on the Dearborn 1046ABN-1 trap, and when would I need it instead of a standard P-trap?
An offset trap puts a lateral jog between the inlet and the outlet, so it is what you reach for when the sink tailpiece does not line up vertically with the wall drain stub. A straight P-trap needs the two reasonably close to plumb. The 1046ABN-1 is the double slip joint offset version, meaning both ends adjust in and out so you can take up the misalignment without repiping the wall stub.
3) Is the Oatey 1046ABN-1 brass or plastic, and will it hold up in a commercial restroom?
It is brass tube, 20 gauge wall, with brass slip nuts rather than plastic ones. That is the construction spec'd for commercial and institutional restrooms where a plastic nut gets cross-threaded or snapped by a maintenance wrench. Finish is chrome.
4) What else do I need to order with the Oatey Dearborn 1046ABN-1 to finish a lavatory drain?
The trap ships with its two slip nuts and two rubber washers, so the joints at each end are covered. What it does not include is the tailpiece from the sink drain, the wall tube or waste arm into the stub-out, and the escutcheon or flange that trims the wall penetration. Order those in 1-1/2 inch to match, and keep the same chrome finish if the trap is exposed.
5) Can I use the 1046ABN-1 on a kitchen sink with 1-1/2 inch drain piping?
Dimensionally yes, it is a 1-1/2 inch trap with slip joint ends, which is the common kitchen drain size. Where it earns its keep is an offset condition, sink drain not lining up with the wall stub. If your kitchen run is a straight shot, a standard 1-1/2 inch P-trap is the simpler part. If the sink drain sits on 1-1/4 inch tubing, as many older lavatories do, you need the 1-1/4 inch trap or an adapter, not this one.
6) Will a chrome trap work for an exposed lavatory where the P-trap is visible under the sink?
Yes, the 1046ABN-1 carries a chrome finish, which is the normal choice for wall-hung lavatories, ADA sinks, and pedestal basins where the trap is in plain sight. For a concealed cabinet install the finish does not matter, but you still get the same brass body and brass nuts.
7) Can I reuse the existing slip nuts when replacing an old trap with the 1046ABN-1?
No need to. New brass nuts and new rubber washers are packed with the trap, two of each, and reusing a flattened old washer is the usual cause of a weeping slip joint. Hand tighten the brass nuts and snug them, they do not need a wrench haul-down to seal.
8) Is the Oatey Dearborn 1046ABN-1 light enough to stock in volume for an MRO cart or multi-family truck inventory?
It is a 0.55 lb part with a 0.034 volume, so a case of them is easy to carry and store. For property managers standardizing lavatory traps across a building, ordering one model number, 1046ABN-1, keeps the nuts and washers interchangeable across every opening.
