OATEY P9046A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Oatey Dearborn P9046A trap offset come with the slip joint nuts and washers, or do I have to buy those separately?
The nuts and washers ship with it. The P9046A includes 2 slip joint nuts and 2 washers, so both ends are ready to make up as soon as you cut your tubing to length. No extra hardware to order.
2) What size drain line does the Oatey P9046A offset fit?
It is a 1-1/2 inch offset with slip joint connections on both ends, so it mates to 1-1/2 inch tubular drain tubing. That is the usual size for a kitchen sink or laundry tub. If you are working a bathroom lavatory on 1-1/4 inch tubular, this is not the size you want.
3) Is the Oatey P9046A the same as a P-trap, or do I still need to order a trap too?
Still need the trap. The P9046A is an offset fitting that corrects alignment between the tailpiece and the trap arm. The water seal comes from the P-trap itself, so order the 1-1/2 inch trap separately and use this piece to make the geometry work.
4) What is a trap offset actually for, and do I need one with my P-trap?
An offset is a jog piece, not a trap on its own. You use one when the sink tailpiece and the wall or floor drain do not line up, letting you shift the run sideways to pick up the trap arm. The Dearborn P9046A is the 1-1/2 inch version, double slip joint so it drops between two tubular pieces without glue or solvent. If your tailpiece lands square on the drain, you do not need it.
5) Is the Oatey P9046A metal or plastic, and will it hold up under a commercial sink?
Polypropylene, in white. Plastic tubular takes drain chemicals and hot water better than thin-wall chrome brass and will not corrode through, which is why it is common under kitchen and utility sinks. Where a property needs an exposed-under-vanity look or the local code calls for metallic tubular in the finished space, go chrome brass instead.
6) Can I install this Dearborn offset without tools or solvent cement?
No cement, no primer. Slip joint means the nut and washer compress onto the tubing and hand tighten, with a quarter turn of channel locks if it weeps. That also means you can break it down later to clear a stoppage, which glued DWV fittings will not let you do.
7) How much does the Oatey P9046A weigh for shipping and stocking purposes?
0.386 lbs each, with a listed volume of 0.058. Light enough that maintenance shops commonly stock several on the truck rather than running one at a time.
