1) What exactly comes in the box with the Oatey 509-1 trap, or do I need to buy nuts and washers separately?
It ships complete. The 509-1 includes 2 zinc nuts, 1 reducing washer, 2 poly washers, 2 rubber washers, a fiber cleanout washer, the cleanout plug, a shallow metal flange, the quarter bend and the cast J-bend with cleanout. The only thing you supply is the tailpiece and the waste arm at the wall.
2) Does this Oatey trap have a cleanout plug on the bottom?
Yes, the cast J-bend has a cleanout, and the plug plus its fiber cleanout washer are in the box. For maintenance work that matters: you can drop the plug and rod or clear the trap without breaking the slip joints or pulling the trap off the wall. If you want a cheaper trap for a fixture nobody services, a plain P-trap without the cleanout is the alternative, but on a commercial fixture the cleanout is usually worth it.
3) What is a shallow flange on a P-trap and will it cover my wall opening?
The shallow flange is the escutcheon that slips over the waste arm and covers the hole where the trap arm enters the wall. Shallow means a low-profile metal plate that sits close to the finished wall, as opposed to a deep or bell flange that projects out to hide a rough or oversized opening. The 509-1 ships with the shallow metal flange, chrome plated to match the trap. If your rough opening is ragged or larger than the escutcheon, a deep flange trap is the better pick.
4) Is the Oatey 509-1 P-trap real brass or plated plastic?
Brass, with a chrome plated finish. It is not a plastic trap and it is not a chrome-look poly part, so it can be used where code or a spec calls for a metal trap on an exposed fixture. The trap weighs 1.75 lb, which is consistent with cast brass rather than tubing alone.
5) How do I order the right Dearborn trap, and what is the part number for the 1-1/2 inch semi-cast with cleanout and shallow flange?
The part number is Oatey 509-1. That number specifies the whole configuration: 1-1/2 in. x 11 in., semi-cast J-bend with cleanout, 17 gauge tube, shallow flange and zinc nuts. Dearborn traps change part number with each of those choices, so if you need a deep flange, a different gauge, or cast brass nuts instead of zinc, that is a different number, not an option on this one.
6) Will the chrome finish on this trap match the exposed traps on the rest of my building's lavatories?
The 509-1 is chrome plated over brass, the standard polished chrome used on exposed commercial lavatory traps, so it matches the usual chrome tubular waste and supplies. If your existing fixtures are ADA-style with insulating trap wraps, or a specified finish like brushed nickel or rough brass, this is not the match and you'd want the trap ordered in that finish instead.
