OATEY 505-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Oatey Dearborn 505-1 P-trap fit a 1-1/4 inch lavatory drain?
Yes. The 505-1 is a 1-1/4 inch inlet and outlet trap, so it mates to a standard 1-1/4 inch lavatory tailpiece and a 1-1/4 inch wall stub. Connections are slip joint, so no soldering or threading is needed at the joints. A reducing washer ships in the bag if the tailpiece is smaller than the trap inlet.
2) What comes in the box with the Oatey 505-1 trap, or do I need to buy washers separately?
Everything for the joints is in the bag: 2 zinc nuts, 1 reducing washer, 2 poly washers, 2 rubber washers, a fiber cleanout washer, the cleanout plug, a shallow metal flange, the quarter bend, and the cast J-bend with cleanout. You supply the tailpiece and whatever is on the wall side of the arm.
3) Is the Oatey Dearborn 505-1 heavy enough for a commercial restroom?
It is built for commercial use. The tube is 17 gauge wall brass rather than thin-wall, and the J-bend is semi-cast, which is the heavier section where traps usually corrode through first. Finish is chrome plated over brass. In high-traffic restrooms that is the spec facility people standardize on when thin-wall traps keep failing.
4) Does this trap have a cleanout plug?
Yes, the 505-1 has a cleanout at the bottom of the cast J-bend, with the plug and fiber cleanout washer supplied. That lets you clear a stoppage or recover a dropped ring without pulling the trap apart, which is the main reason maintenance departments order the cleanout version.
5) What is a shallow flange on a P-trap and when should I order the deep one instead?
The shallow flange on the 505-1 is a low-profile escutcheon that covers the hole where the trap arm enters the wall. It works when the wall face is finished flush and the pipe penetration is neat. If the opening is oversized or ragged, or tile has been cut back around the stub, a deep flange gives more coverage and hides more of the gap.
6) How long is the trap arm on the Oatey 505-1?
The arm is 10 inches, so measure from the wall stub to the centerline of the tailpiece before ordering. Ten inches covers most standard lavatory rough-ins and can be cut shorter if the fixture sits tight to the wall. It cannot be extended, so a longer offset needs a longer arm or an extension tube.
7) Why zinc nuts instead of brass or chrome nuts on the Oatey 505-1?
The 505-1 ships with 2 zinc slip nuts. They are the standard commercial-grade nut for exposed traps and are what keeps the assembly cost down under a lavatory where the trap is behind a bowl or panel. If the trap is fully exposed on a wall-hung fixture where appearance matters, a chrome-nut version of the same trap is the one to specify.
