1) Will the Delta Breez GBR80H fit in the opening left by an older bath fan I'm replacing?
The GBR80H uses a compact housing measuring 8-1/4" x 8" x 5-3/4", which Delta calls out for retrofit and replacement of older bath fans. The visible grille covers a larger footprint at 10-3/4 by 10-3/4 inches, so it hides some ragged drywall from the old unit. Depth is the number to check first in a shallow joist bay: 5-3/4 inches of housing height has to clear.
2) Can a bath fan with a humidity sensor be mounted over a tub or shower?
The GBR80H is UL and cUL listed for use in a tub or shower enclosure, but only when the branch circuit feeding it is GFCI protected. Outside the enclosure it's listed for both ceiling and wall mount, so a wall install on an exterior wall is fair game.
3) How does the humidity sensor on the Delta Breez GBR80H actually work day to day?
Two speeds, and the sensor picks between them. Below the set point the fan runs continuously at a pre-set lower level, either off or roughly half output. When humidity climbs past the user-adjustable set point, it kicks to full speed until the room dries out. The set point is adjustable at the fan, so you can dial it back in a humid climate where a factory setting would leave it running full tilt all summer.
4) Do I need a separate switch or timer to run the GBR80H, or can it run off the existing single wall switch?
Because the humidity sensor drives the speed change itself, the fan doesn't need a humidistat switch or a countdown timer added at the wall. Delta publishes a single wall switch set-up sheet for it, so an existing single switch feed can be wired to it. Power is 120V, 60Hz, drawing 0.22A max.
