Deltana DSPA3040 Parliament Hinge, 3" x 4", Solid Brass (Pair)

A parliament hinge is a projecting hinge: the leaves throw the door out past the trim so it can swing a full 180 degrees and lie back flat against the wall. That is what you use when a standard butt hinge lets the door bind on deep casing, a thick jamb, or a plant-on molding. The Deltana DSPA3040 is the 3 x 4 inch solid brass version, sold as a pair. If the door swings clear on ordinary trim and you just need it hung, a plain butt hinge is the simpler and cheaper part.

The DSPA3040 measures 3 x 4 inches: 3 inches is the leaf height along the door edge, 4 inches is the open width across both leaves. On a parliament hinge that width is the number that matters, because the wider the open leaf, the further the door is thrown clear of the casing. Leaf thickness is .157 inch. Measure how far your trim stands proud of the jamb face before you commit to the 4 inch width.

One order is a pair, two hinges. A light interior door normally hangs on two hinges, so one pair does a door. If the door is tall or heavy enough to want three hinges, order two pairs and you will have a spare leaf left over. Screws are included as #10 x 1-1/4 inch wood screws.

No. The DSPA3040 is a residential-duty hinge with a plain bearing, which is the right build for interior doors that see household traffic. A corridor or entry door in a commercial building cycles far more, and a plain bearing hinge will wear at the knuckle. For that traffic you want a ball bearing hinge rated for commercial use. Inside an apartment unit or a house, this one is fine.

The pin is removable, not an NRP hinge. On an outswing door the barrel sits on the outside, so a removable pin means someone can drive it out and lift the door off. Keep the DSPA3040 on interior or inswing openings, or on an outswing door pair it with a security stud or hinge pin set. If the opening is a security concern, specify an NRP hinge instead.

Eight finishes: Polished Brass, PVD Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Brushed Nickel, Antique Nickel, Polished Chrome, and Brushed Chrome. If the door is in a bath, a coastal house, or anywhere humid, take the PVD Polished Brass. PVD is a deposited coating rather than a lacquer, so it does not craze or wear through the way lacquered brass does. Oil Rubbed Bronze is a living finish and will lighten at the knuckle where hands and the door move it.

Screws come with it: #10 x 1-1/4 inch wood screws. Those bite fine into a solid wood door or a solid stile. In a hollow core door the 1-1/4 inch length only reaches the perimeter frame, so make sure the mortise lands on the solid rail and not on the cardboard core. Into a steel or masonry jamb you will need different fasteners, since what is supplied is a wood screw.

Solid brass, both the material and the substrate. That matters for two things: you can polish through a scuff without exposing a different base metal underneath, and the brass will not rust if the door is somewhere damp. The applied finishes sit on top of solid brass rather than on steel or zinc.

Model DSPA3040 is one size, 3 x 4 inches, in solid brass, so every pair you order is the same part and the same mortise. Buy all the doors' worth in the same finish and the same run if you can, because plated and living finishes can drift slightly batch to batch, most noticeably on Antique Brass and Oil Rubbed Bronze. If some openings need a wider throw past deeper trim, those doors need a different size, not a different finish.
