Design Hardware 1000R-42-32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Design Hardware 1000R on a fire rated door?
Not this one. The 1000R with hex key dogging is a panic exit device only, and it is not fire rated. Fire rated openings cannot have mechanical dogging at all, which is exactly what this configuration includes. For an A label opening, go to a fire rated rim device: the Marks USA M9900F comes in 36 and 48 inch, the Orca OED85 in 36 inch, or the Dexter ED1000 fire rated Grade 1 rim device.
2) Do I need to specify handing when ordering the Design Hardware 1000R rim device?
No handing to specify. The 1000R is non handed and completely reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means a single device on the shelf works on any door it fits, and a field reversal is part of the install, not a return.
3) Will the Design Hardware 1000R latch into my existing rim strike?
Plan on using the strike that comes with it. The 1000R uses a deadlocking latchbolt with 5/8 inch projection and ships with a matching roller strike, also 5/8 inch projection, plus a 1/8 inch shim to take up gap variation at the frame. If your existing strike is a different projection or a non roller type, the pushbar will feel wrong and the latch may not deadlock properly. Shim kits are available if the frame needs more adjustment than the included shim gives you.
4) What is a direct substitute for a Design Hardware 1000R 42 inch rim exit device on a 4 foot wide door?
The Dexter ED1000 Series 4FT rim exit device is the closest straight equivalent for a 4 foot opening. It is a Grade 1 rim device and is not fire rated, matching the 1000R at 42 inches, which itself is a Grade 1 non-rated device sized for 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide doors. Both are hollow metal and aluminum door devices rather than wood door devices. If the opening is a full 48 inches, the Cal-Royal A9820 at 48 inches and the DORMA 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile device cover that width instead.
5) My aluminum storefront door has a narrow stile. Will the 1000R work, or do I need a different exit device?
The 1000R requires a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, so a narrow stile storefront leaf will not take it. Narrow stile rim devices built for that condition include the Adams Rite 8700 and 8800 Series, both Grade 1 narrow stile, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 Grade 1 narrow stile, the Falcon 1590EO at 42 inches and the Falcon 1790EO at 42 inches, both Grade 1 narrow stile exit only, and the TownSteel ED3700 and ED8900, both Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile. The two Falcon devices match the 42 inch length of the 1000R.
6) Is a pressure sense bar or switch bar the same as a 1000R panic device?
They are different hardware. The 1000R is a mechanical rim exit device with a deadlocking latchbolt that latches the door itself. The SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC SureExit PSB560 Series 36 inch is a pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology. Both SDC bars fit narrow or wide stile doors and signal a lock to release rather than throwing a latch, so the opening still needs the maglock or electric lock they control.
7) What is a comparable 42 to 48 inch rim exit device if the Design Hardware 1000R does not suit?
For a wide opening in the same Grade 1 class, the Dormakaba 9300A is a 48 inch wide stile rim device rated heavy duty and listed for 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch push bar device in Grade 2 rather than Grade 1. If the door is exposed to salt air, the 1000R itself is offered in Marine Grade 316 stainless, which none of those alternatives is listed for.
8) How much does a rim exit device stick out into the corridor? I have a clearance problem.
The 1000R projects 3-3/8 inches with the pushbar at neutral and 2-13/16 inches with the bar depressed or dogged down. If you are working to a corridor clear width or a wall return, 3-3/8 inches is the number to use, since that is the resting condition. Dogging it down during business hours pulls it back to 2-13/16 inches.
9) How do I hold the door unlatched during business hours with the 1000R?
Hex key dogging is standard on the 1000R, using a 5/32 inch hex key. Depress the pushbar, turn the key, and the latch stays retracted so the door pushes free. If you would rather staff not carry a hex wrench, cylinder dogging kits are available and can be added to a new device or retrofitted to one already installed. For scheduled or access controlled hold open, the ED electric dogging option does it from the panel instead.
10) What electrified options can I get on the Design Hardware 1000 Series exit device?
Four, and they solve different problems. ELR is motorized electric latch retraction, for tying the door into an access control system so a credential pulls the latch. ED is electric dogging, for scheduled unlock. REX is request to exit, which signals the panel when someone pushes the bar so the alarm does not trip. LBM is latch bolt monitoring, which reports whether the latch is actually thrown. If you only need local alarm on unauthorized exit and no panel at all, the ALK-1000 exit alarm kit fits new or existing devices.
11) Does the Design Hardware 1000R meet ADA and Grade 1 for a commercial building?
The 1000R is built to ANSI Grade 1 and is UL Listed for panic exit hardware. With lever trim it meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1. Note the ADA compliance depends on the trim: exit only with no outside trim has nothing to operate from the pull side, so specify lever trim where ADA operable hardware is required on the exterior.
12) What comes in the box with the Design Hardware 1000R, and what do I still have to order?
The device ships with the roller strike, ASA and latch fillers, and a fastener assortment covering wood, machine, and self tapping machine screws. Exterior trim is separate, so if you need to get back in from outside you order lever or pull trim on top of the device. Shim kits, cylinder dogging kits, and the ALK-1000 alarm kit are also add ons. The F1000R fire rated version includes thru bolts.
13) Rim exit device or vertical rod for my exterior door?
A rim device like the 1000R latches into a strike on the frame at the strike jamb. That is the right choice for a single door in a frame, and it is the simplest device to install and maintain because there are no rods running to the head and threshold. It will not work on a pair of doors with no center mullion, since there is nothing at the jamb to latch into. For that opening you want a vertical rod device, such as the Hager 4501 concealed vertical rod for a wide stile door or the Hager 4601 for narrow stile.
14) Which rim exit devices also offer hex key dogging like the Design Hardware 1000R?

17) What looks like a substitute for a 1000R rim exit device but will not actually latch a door?
Two items sit next to rim exit devices and do not perform the same job. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a Grade 1 super heavy duty dummy exit device with wide stile design, meaning it provides the push bar appearance without an operating latch. The Dexter ED1500-EXTRD-SP is a 12 inch extension rod assembly for ED1500 exit devices, a component rather than a device. The 1000R by contrast has a deadlocking latchbolt with a 5/8 inch throw and ships with a roller strike.
18) The opening needs a crossbar instead of a push bar. What replaces the 1000R?
The 1000R uses a push bar with an anodized aluminum channel. If a night latch function is preferred, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim. Devices carried as exit only, such as the Corbin Russwin ED2200 and the Marks USA M9900 at 36 inches, do not take outside trim.
20) What finishes does the Design Hardware 1000R come in, and will it match my other doors?
Five finishes are stocked on the 42 inch 1000R: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 dark bronze, 625 bright chrome, and 630 satin stainless steel. The finish is applied to the headcover, pushbar, and end cap, which are the parts anyone sees. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for existing commercial openings; 613 dark bronze matches bronze anodized aluminum storefront.
21) Is the Design Hardware 1000R heavy duty enough for a high traffic exit?
It is rated for medium to heavy use, with an extruded anodized aluminum channel over a steel chassis. That covers most commercial exterior and stairwell doors.
