Design Hardware F1000R-42-32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door width does the Design Hardware 42 inch F1000R rim exit device cover?
The 42 inch F1000R covers doors from 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide as supplied. It can also be cut down to fit a door as narrow as 3'-4". Below that, use the 33 inch version, which suits 3'-0" doors and cuts down to 2'-8".
2) How much stile do I need for a Design Hardware 1000R rim device?
Minimum 4-1/2 inches of stile. The center case runs 8 inches by 2-7/8 inches by 2-13/16 inches, and that case is what drives the requirement. On an aluminum storefront door with a narrower stile than that, this is the wrong device and you want a true narrow stile rim device instead, such as the Adams Rite 3700 Series or the TownSteel ED3700.
3) Will a Design Hardware 1000R rim device latch into my existing strike?
The 1000R uses a deadlocking latchbolt with 5/8 inch projection and ships with a roller strike of matching 5/8 inch projection plus a 1/8 inch shim. If your existing strike was cut for a different projection or sits proud of the frame, plan on installing the supplied roller strike rather than reusing what is there. Shim kits are available if the gap needs correcting.
4) What comes in the box with the Design Hardware F1000R, and what do I still need to buy?
The F1000R comes with the roller strike, ASA and latch fillers, and a fastener pack of wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, plus thru bolts on the F1000R. Exterior trim is separate: you order the lever or pull trim you need, and lever trim is what gets the opening to ADA. Shim kits, cylinder dogging kits and the ALK-1000 exit alarm kit are also add-ons.
5) What is the closest fire rated rim exit device equivalent to the Design Hardware F1000R for a 4 foot wide opening?
The Design Hardware F1000R is a fire rated rim device built for 3'-8" to 4'-0" wide doors in its 42 inch length, with a deadlocking latchbolt at 5/8 inch throw. The nearest fire rated alternatives at comparable width are the Marks USA M9900F in 48 inch, an exit only fire rated rim device with a panic protector end cap, and the Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated Grade 1 rim device. Both are fire rated and neither is rated for wood doors, matching the F1000R on that point.
6) The door only has a 2 inch stile - can the Design Hardware F1000R be used, or is there a narrow stile alternative?
The F1000R center case requires a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, so it will not land on a narrow stile aluminum door. Narrow stile rim devices to look at instead include the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch, which is fire rated and Grade 1, the TownSteel ED3700 36 inch Grade 1 narrow stile, and the Falcon 1590EO at 42 inch, a Grade 1 narrow stile exit only device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Of those, the Adams Rite 3700 is the one that is fire rated.
7) Do I need to order the Design Hardware 1000R left or right hand?
No handing to specify. The 1000R is non-handed and completely reversible, so one device covers either swing. That makes it easy to stock a single part number across a building with mixed door swings.
8) How much does a rim exit device stick out into the corridor?
Projection on the 1000R is 3-3/8 inches with the pushbar at rest and 2-13/16 inches with the pushbar depressed. That matters where the door swings into a tight vestibule or where a wall or return is close to the opening.
9) Can the Design Hardware 1000R be electrified for access control?
Yes. The 1000 Series offers ELR motorized electric latch retraction, ED electric dogging, REX request to exit, and LBM latch bolt monitoring. ELR is what you want when a card reader or a scheduled unlock needs to pull the latch; REX and LBM are the signals your access control panel reads back.
10) Should I use a rim exit device or a vertical rod device on my opening?
A rim device like the 1000R latches into a strike on the frame at the door edge, which is the simple choice for a single door in a frame, or for the active leaf of a pair where a mullion carries the strike. If you have a pair of doors with no mullion and need both leaves to latch, a rim device will not do it and you want a vertical rod device instead, such as the Hager 4501 concealed vertical rod for wide stile or the Hager 4601 for narrow stile.
11) If the opening is not fire rated, what rim device can be used instead of the Design Hardware F1000R?
On a non-rated opening you are not bound to a labeled device. The Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide rim exit device with a push bar and a Grade 2 chassis, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are non fire rated. Note that the F1000R is fire rated and, per its own spec, rated devices do not get dogging, while the F1000R family's hex key dogging is a panic-only feature.
12) Is a pressure sense bar or switch bar a substitute for the Design Hardware F1000R?
No. The F1000R is a mechanical rim exit device with a deadlocking latchbolt and a roller strike, so it latches the door on its own. The SDC PSB560 Series 36 inch is a pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology and the SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock - both signal or release a separate locking device rather than providing a latch. Use them where an electromagnetic lock is already securing the opening, not as a drop-in for a latching rim device.
13) What is the difference between the Design Hardware F1000R and a concealed vertical rod device like the Hager 4501?
The F1000R is a rim device: the latch projects from the device into a surface mounted roller strike on the frame, with a 5/8 inch throw. The Hager 4501 Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad, and the Hager 4601 Series 36 inch is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod version. Vertical rod devices latch into the head and sill and require door prep for concealed rods, so they are not interchangeable with a rim device on an already prepped opening.
14) Is the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM a replacement for the Design Hardware F1000R?
It is not a direct swap. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device, but it is catalogued with a dummy function and carries RX and motorized electric latch retraction. The F1000R is a mechanical panic device with a deadlocking 5/8 inch latchbolt; electrification such as motorized electric latch retraction, electric dogging, request to exit, and latch bolt monitoring is offered separately for the 1000 Series. Match the function before substituting.
15) What finishes does the Design Hardware 42 inch fire rated rim device come in?
Five: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 dark bronze, 625 bright chrome and 630 satin stainless. The finish is applied to the headcover, pushbar and end cap over the extruded anodized aluminum channel, so those are the parts that read visually against your other openings. A marine grade 316 stainless option exists for coastal or pool area doors.
16) Is the Design Hardware 1000R heavy enough for a school or apartment main entrance?
It is built for medium to heavy use in commercial openings, with an extruded anodized aluminum channel over a steel chassis and Grade 1 certification. For a 24/7 entrance taking abuse beyond that, extra heavy duty options exist in the same rim format, like the Detex Advantex 10 Series wide stile or the Detex 40 Series narrow stile.
