Design Hardware F1000R-33-32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I put the Design Hardware F1000R on a wood door?
No. The 1000R rim device is not rated for wood door application, so on a wood fire door you need a different device. Among fire rated rim devices, the Adams Rite 3700 Series is listed as wood door compatible. Hollow metal and aluminum doors with the required 4-1/2" stile are where the F1000R belongs.
2) What door width does the 33 inch Design Hardware 1000R exit device cover, and can it be cut down?
The 33" device is sized for a 3'-0" wide door and can be cut down to fit a door as narrow as 2'-8". Anything wider than 3'-0" moves you to the 42" device, which covers 3'-8" to 4'-0" and cuts down to 3'-4". So between the two lengths the series covers 2'-8" through 4'-0" openings.
3) Will the Design Hardware 1000R latch into my existing rim strike?
The 1000R uses a deadlocking latchbolt with a 5/8" projection and ships with a matching roller strike that also has 5/8" projection plus a 1/8" shim. Plan on using the supplied roller strike rather than reusing an old one; the shim lets you take up gap where the frame stop sits proud. If your frame has an ASA prep from a previous mortise lock, ASA and latch fillers are included in the box.
4) What else do I need to order with a Design Hardware 1000R rim device to finish the job?
The device itself covers the inside of the door: it comes with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, the F1000R adds thru bolts, and ASA and latch fillers are in the box. What you add depends on the opening. Outside operation means an exterior trim, ordered separately. Shim kits are available where the frame needs packing out. If you want the door alarmed, the ALK-1000 exit alarm kit fits new or existing devices, and cylinder dogging kits are also sold for new or existing devices.
5) What rim exit device should I use on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door instead of the F1000R?
The F1000R needs a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, which is wider than a typical storefront stile. For narrow stile openings, the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick, and the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device at 36 inches for 1-3/4 inch doors. If the narrow stile opening is fire rated, the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device carries a fire rating and Grade 1.
6) What fire rated rim device works for a 32 to 36 inch opening besides the Design Hardware F1000R?
The Arrow FS1250 is a fire rated 32 inch rim exit device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Orca Hardware OED85 Series is a fire rated 36 inch rim device in exit only form. The Marks USA M9900F 36 inch is fire rated and exit only with a panic protector end cap. The F1000R at 33 inches suits a 3 foot wide door and can be cut down to fit a 2 foot 8 inch wide door.
7) Is a concealed vertical rod device an alternative to the F1000R rim device?
No - they latch differently. The F1000R is a rim device with a deadlocking latchbolt of 5/8 inch throw striking a surface mounted roller strike on the frame. The Hager 4501 Series 36 inch and Hager 4601 Series 36 inch are Grade 1 concealed vertical rod devices, which latch top and bottom into the frame and floor and require a door prepped for concealed rods. A rim device and a vertical rod device are not interchangeable in an existing prep.
8) What looks like a substitute for a rim panic device but is not one?
Several bars in the same shape do a different job. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a dummy exit device - a wide stile bar with no latching mechanism, for the inactive leaf. The SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock rather than throwing its own latch, and the SDC SureExit PSB560 Series 36 inch is a pressure sense bar. The Dexter ED1500-EXTRD-SP is an extension rod assembly, a 12 inch part for ED1500 devices, not a device. The F1000R is a mechanical rim panic device with its own deadlocking latchbolt.
9) Which rim exit device has hex key dogging like the Design Hardware 1000R?
The Stanley Security QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex key dogging, and the Dormakaba QED200 is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow exit device in a 36 inch size. The 1000R Series carries 5/32 inch hex key dogging as standard on panic exit hardware; on fire rated devices there is no dogging, since UL listing for A label 3 hour fire doors does not permit it.
10) How far does a rim exit device stick out into the corridor once it's mounted?
The Design Hardware 1000 Series projects 3-3/8" from the door face with the pushbar at rest, and 2-13/16" with the bar depressed or dogged. That matters where the door swings into a tight corridor, next to a wall return, or where a second leaf passes close by.
11) Is the Design Hardware 1000R ADA compliant for a classroom or office door?
With lever trim, the 1000 Series meets ADA requirements under ANSI A117.1. The pushbar side is inherently compliant; it's the outside that decides it, so specify lever trim rather than a knob or a pull if the opening has to be accessible. Exterior trims are sold as separate accessories, so the trim has to go on the order.
12) Can I get the Design Hardware 1000 Series exit device with electric latch retraction or request to exit?
The 1000 Series has an electrified line: ELR motorized electric latch retraction, ED electric dogging, REX request to exit, and LBM latch bolt monitoring. ELR is what you want when the device has to unlatch on a card read or a schedule; REX and LBM are the signals back to the access control panel. Note that on a fire rated opening you can't use electric dogging to hold the latch retracted, since rated devices aren't dogged.
13) Should I use a rim exit device or a vertical rod device on my door?
A rim device like the Design Hardware 1000R latches into a strike on the frame at the lock edge, so it's the simpler and lower maintenance choice on any single door in a frame with a solid strike jamb. Vertical rod devices latch at the head and the sill instead, which is what you need on a pair of doors with no center mullion, or on a door where you can't strike the jamb. If that's your situation, a concealed vertical rod device such as the Hager 4501 Series is the type to look at rather than a rim device.
14) Is the Design Hardware 1000R heavy duty enough for a school or apartment building exterior door?
It's built for medium to heavy use in commercial service, with an extruded anodized aluminum channel over a steel chassis, and it meets ANSI A156.3 Grade 1. For a high traffic exterior on an institutional building that's the right class of hardware. If the opening is genuinely abusive, extra heavy duty options exist in the category, such as the Detex 10 Advantex Series wide stile rim device.
15) Can I hold the door unlatched during the day with the Design Hardware 1000R?
On a non-rated 1000 Series device, yes: 5/32" hex key dogging is standard, so you depress the pushbar and set the dogging with an allen wrench to leave the door push-pull open. Cylinder dogging kits are also available if you'd rather use a key than a hex wrench, and they fit new or existing devices. On the fire rated F1000R, dogging is not allowed, and electric dogging is off the table on that opening too.
16) Which rim exit devices are non-handed like the Design Hardware 1000R?
The 1000R is non handed and completely reversible, so one device covers either hand. The BEST Precision 5101 Series is a non-handed universal design rim device, the BEST 2401 Series is a non-handed narrow stile rim device in exit only form, and the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad rim panic device for 1-3/4 inch doors. Sargent 2828 and 3828 are Grade 1 reversible rim devices for 48 inch doors.
17) What is a simpler Grade 1 rim exit device than the F1000R for a non rated opening?
On an opening that does not need a fire label, the Corbin Russwin ED2200 is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device at 36 inches in exit only form, and the TownSteel ED1100 is a heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile panic rim device at 36 inches. Both are non fire rated, where the F1000R is a fire rated device. They cover the same opening differently. The F1000R uses a push bar with a 3-3/8 inch projection undogged and 2-13/16 inch with the pushbar depressed, so a crossbar device changes both the look of the door and the clearance in front of it.

21) I need a nightlatch function rim device - is the F1000R the right choice?
The F1000R is a fire rated rim panic device; outside function comes from the exterior trim selected. If the requirement is a device supplied in nightlatch function, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim.
22) What finishes does the Design Hardware F1000R rim exit device come in?
Five finishes on the F1000R: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 dark bronze, 625 bright chrome and 630 satin stainless. The finish is applied to the headcover, pushbar and end cap, which is where it shows on the door. If the opening is coastal or a wash down area, the 1000 Series also has a marine grade 316 stainless option.
