Design Hardware Vinyl Perimeter Seals

The PS-V vinyl bulb perimeter seal is Classified by UL for hollow metal fire doors rated up to and including 3 hours, and wood doors rated up to 1-1/2 hours. It is fire tested to UL 10B and UL 10C, UBC7-2 Part 1, and BS476, and smoke tested and listed to UL 1784, UBC7-2 Part II and BS476. So it covers both the fire and the smoke side of an opening, which is what an inspector on a healthcare or institutional job will be looking for.

Overall width of the PS-V is 1-3/16 inches, with a 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch vinyl bulb doing the sealing. That 1-3/16 inch footprint is what has to land on the stop face of the frame, so measure your stop before ordering. The small bulb section means it seals a tight, consistent gap rather than bridging a badly out of square opening.

The retainer is 6063-T5 extruded aluminum alloy, the standard architectural extrusion alloy, in Mill Finish or Dark Bronze. Aluminum does not rust, which is why this goes on exterior openings where the seal takes rain and wind. Mill Finish is the raw aluminum look and is the usual pick on aluminum storefront; Dark Bronze matches bronze anodized frames and dark painted hollow metal.

They do different jobs and most exterior openings get both. The PS-V mounts on the frame and seals the head and the two jambs where the door meets the stop, closing the gap around three sides. It does nothing about the gap under the door, which is the biggest single air leak on most openings, so pair it with a sweep or an automatic door bottom plus a threshold. Buying a perimeter seal alone and expecting the draft to stop is the common mistake.
