1) What door prep does the Design Hardware X84 lever lock need?
Standard ANSI A115.2 prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore plus two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes. That is the same prep most Grade 1 cylindrical levers use, so a door already bored for a commercial cylindrical lock takes the X84 without new holes. Combination screws are included for wood or metal doors and frames.
2) What does classroom function mean on the X84 lever, and is it the right function for a school door?
Classroom function means the outside lever is locked and unlocked only by key from the outside. There is no button or thumbturn inside, so a teacher cannot secure the room without stepping into the corridor with a key. The inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. If you want lockdown from inside the room, that is classroom security function instead, which the Dexter C1000 Series offers as a Grade 1 classroom security lever.
3) Will the Design Hardware X84 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The X84 comes with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA square corner strike, which is the standard commercial frame prep, and the latchbolt is stainless with a 1/2 inch projection. If your frame is already cut for an ASA lip strike you are a straight swap. T strikes and full lip strikes are available if the frame prep is different. The front is self adjusting for square or beveled edge doors.
4) What backset does the Design Hardware X84 come with, and can I get 2-3/8?
Standard is a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset is available with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. Measure from the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch crossbore before you order; the two are not interchangeable in an existing bore.
5) Is the X84 lever handed, or can I use one lock on left and right hand doors?
Non-handed and fully reversible with the flat lever, so one part number covers both swings. The exception is the S-A and S-B lever styles, which are handed. If you are stocking spares for a building, the flat lever is the one to keep on the shelf.
6) Can I key the Design Hardware X84 into my existing Schlage C master key system?
The X84 uses a 6 pin brass cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with two keys, so it drops into an existing C keyway system. You choose keyed different or keyed alike when ordering. There is also an SFIC prep version supplied less core, which is what you want if the building runs small format interchangeable cores and your locksmith pins the cores.
7) Can the Design Hardware X84 go on a fire rated door?
The X84 is UL Listed for A label 3 hour fire doors and the latchbolt is deadlocking, which is what a fire door needs. It also meets ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and complies with ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes, so it covers a corridor or stairwell opening in a school or healthcare facility.
8) Which cylinder option should I order on the X84, conventional or SFIC prep?
Two builds. Conventional gives you a 6 pin brass cylinder in Schlage C with two keys, ready to hang. SFIC prep ships less core, so you supply the small format interchangeable core yourself, which is how facilities that rekey in house standardize. Both come in 613 dark bronze and 626 satin chrome, and keying is specified as KD or KA on the order.
9) Will the X84 lever hold up on a high traffic school or dorm door?
It is built for abuse: steel chassis, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance, clutching levers standard so forcing a locked lever spins it instead of breaking the chassis, and an anti-sag mechanism with independent lever return springs so the lever does not droop after a few thousand cycles. Grade 1, commercial rated. Sagging levers and snapped spindles are the two things that put cheaper levers back in the shop, and both are addressed here.
10) What is the difference between the Design Hardware X84 classroom lever and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever?
Both are classroom function levers with a 6 pin Schlage C keyway, and both use a 2-3/4 inch backset. The difference is duty rating: the X84 is ANSI A156.2 Grade 1 and UL Listed for 3 hour A label fire doors, while the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 lever from the AG Series. For a heavily used school corridor the Grade 1 is the one to spec; for a lower traffic opening on a budget the AG03 covers the same function.
11) I need a Grade 1 classroom lever but the door is only 1-3/8 inch. What are my options?
The X84 handles 1-3/8 inch doors with shims. If you would rather have a lock that lists 1-3/8 inch in its native range, the Dexter C1000 Series classroom lever is Grade 1 with a 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range and clutching levers. Both are keyed classroom function, so the choice comes down to whether you want to fit shims on install.
12) Does the X84 classroom lever work for an exterior entry door?
Not the right function. Classroom function has no inside locking, so anyone leaving cannot secure the door behind them, and the outside lever stays in whatever state the key last left it. For a keyed exterior opening you want entry or storeroom function. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial entry lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
13) What finishes does the Design Hardware X84 lever come in?
Stocked in 613 dark bronze and 626 satin chrome, which are the two finishes that cover most commercial openings. 15) I need matching passage and dummy levers to go with a classroom lockset. What pairs with a Grade 1 cylindrical lever?
The X84 is the keyed classroom opening; storage rooms and corridor doors in the same run need passage and dummy trim. Grade 1 cylindrical options include the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage lever from the CL3100 Series, which is fire rated and vandal resistant for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lever for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors, and the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim. The lever profiles will not match the X Series exactly, so if visual consistency matters across the floor, stay in the X Series for the non-keyed functions.
