1) Will the Design Hardware J86 storeroom lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it only for 1-3/4?
The J86 ships factory set for 1-3/4 inch doors and adjusts down to 1-3/8 or up to 2 inches, so an older 1-3/8 inch interior door or a 2 inch exterior slab both work without ordering anything special. Door prep is the standard ANSI A115.2 2-1/8 inch crossbore with two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes.
2) Does the J86 come with a 2-3/4 backset or 2-3/8, and can I get the other one?
Standard is a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset is available instead, and it comes with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. Either front is self adjusting for square or beveled door edges, so you do not need to specify the edge bevel when you order.
3) Will the J86 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The lock is supplied with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA square corner strike, which is the standard commercial frame prep, and the stainless latchbolt has a 1/2 inch projection. If your frame is already cut for an ASA lip strike you can reuse the existing strike. Full lip strikes are also available if the existing cutout needs a longer lip to reach the door face.
4) What does storeroom function actually do on a J86, and is it the right one for a mechanical or supply room?
Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked at all times. The key retracts the latch for entry but does not leave the lever unlocked, and the inside lever always turns for free egress. That is the standard choice for mechanical rooms, electrical closets, IT rooms and supply storage where the door must never be left on latch. If you want staff to be able to unlock the outside lever and leave it unlocked during business hours, storeroom is the wrong function.
