1) Will the Design Hardware J76 privacy lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or only 1-3/4?
The J76 privacy leverset ships factory set for 1-3/4 inch doors and can be adjusted to fit anything from 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inches thick. So older 1-3/8 inch interior doors and thicker 2 inch doors are both covered without a special order.
2) What backset does the J76 come with, and can I get 2-3/8 for a residential-prep door?
Standard is a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset version is available with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. Both latch fronts are self adjusting for square or beveled edge doors, so one part covers either door edge.
3) Will this privacy lever drop into my existing cylindrical lock prep?
It uses ANSI A115.2 door prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore with two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes. If the door already has a standard 2-1/8 inch bore at 2-3/4 inch backset, the J76 goes straight in. The thru bolts are removable, so it can also be installed without them where the existing holes do not line up.
4) Do I need to order a hand for this lever?
No. The J76 is non-handed and completely reversible with the flat lever, so one part works on left or right hand doors. Handing only matters if you go to the S-A or S-B lever styles, which are handed.
5) Can I use this privacy set on a rated bathroom door?
Yes. The J76 is UL Listed for A Label 3 hour fire doors and meets ANSI A156.2 Grade 2. The latch is stainless steel with a 1/2 inch projection, and it also meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility requirements, which is why lever trim is used on rated toilet rooms in commercial buildings.
6) Will the J76 latch into the strike already in my frame?
It comes with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA standard square corner strike, which is the common commercial frame prep, and the latchbolt throws 1/2 inch. If your frame is prepped for that ASA strike the existing cutout works. Full lip strikes are also available if the frame or jamb condition needs one.
7) What is a comparable Grade 2 commercial privacy lever to the Design Hardware J76?

8) I need a knob instead of a lever for a bath door - what privacy option is there?
The Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy/bed/bath cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. The Design Hardware J76 is the lever version of the same function, with a 5 inch flat lever and 3-3/8 inch wrought brass roses, and meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes - knobs do not satisfy ADA operable-hardware requirements.
9) Would a Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever work in place of the Design Hardware J76?
The Kwikset 300BRNL RDT Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever set for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Design Hardware J76 is a Grade 2 commercial privacy lever set that adjusts from 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inch and uses a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch ASA strike, so the door prep and strike cutout differ from a residential-grade set.
10) The room needs key access for staff as well - what keyed lever should I use instead?
The Design Hardware J76 is non-keyed privacy only. For keyed control, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in a 6-pin Schlage C keyway with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
11) Is there a key or cylinder on the J76, or is it push-button privacy only?
Privacy function, non-keyed. There is no cylinder in the J76, so it locks from inside the room only, the way a bed or bath lock should. If you need a key on the outside, look at a keyed function in the same J Series instead, or an entrance lever such as the Hager 2525.
12) What else could I buy instead of the Design Hardware J76 for a bath door?
