Design Hardware DH-X-76-F-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door prep does the Design Hardware X76 lever lockset need?
Standard ANSI A115.2 prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore plus two 3/8 inch thru-bolt holes. Backset is 2-3/4 inches standard with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface, and a 2-3/8 inch backset version is offered with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. The front is self-adjusting, so it seats on either a square or a beveled door edge without ordering a separate latch.
2) Will the X76 privacy lever latch into the strike already in my frame?
If the frame has the common ASA prep, yes. The X76 ships with a 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch ASA square corner strike, which is the standard commercial hollow metal frame cutout, and the stainless latchbolt has a 1/2 inch projection. T strikes and full lip strikes are also available if the existing cutout is a different shape. If your frame is prepped for a small radius corner residential strike, the frame will need to be modified.
3) Do I have to specify handing on the Design Hardware X76 lever?
Not with the flat lever. The X76 is non-handed and completely reversible, so one part number works on a left or right hand door. Handing only becomes a question if you switch to the S-A or S-B lever styles, which are handed. Curved and half curved levers are also offered and, like the flat, are non-handed.
4) Can a privacy lever be used on a fire rated door?
The X76 is UL Listed for A label 3 hour fire doors and meets ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1. Privacy function has no keyed cylinder, so on a bed or bath opening inside a rated corridor assembly it is the right choice. It is non-keyed, so it is not a substitute anywhere the door must be secured against entry.
5) Will the X76 drop into the holes left by an old Grade 2 lever without redrilling?
If the old lock was a standard cylindrical lockset on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 2-1/8 inch crossbore, the X76 goes into the same prep. Watch two things: the 2-3/4 inch backset is standard here and a 2-3/8 inch backset is a separate order, and the 3-3/8 inch rose has to cover whatever the previous rose left behind. Sets like the Cal-Royal AG00 and Kwikset 200BRNL use a 2-3/8 inch backset, so an opening bored for one of those wants the 2-3/8 version of the X series latch.
6) Is the Design Hardware X76 ADA compliant for a restroom door?
The X76 meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes. It is a lever, not a knob, so it operates without grasping or twisting, and the 5 inch solid zinc diecast lever sits on a 3-3/8 inch wrought brass rose. That combination is what an inspector looks for on a public restroom or bed and bath opening.
7) How well does a Grade 1 privacy lever hold up in an apartment building or dorm?
The X76 is built for that traffic. Grade 1 to ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, a steel chassis that is zinc dichromated against corrosion, and an anti-sag mechanism with independent lever return springs so the lever does not droop after a few years of use. Clutching levers are standard on locking functions, so forcing a locked lever spins it rather than breaking the chassis. There is also a marine grade 316 stainless lever and rose cover upgrade for coastal or pool area openings.
8) Should I use a privacy lever or a passage lever on a bathroom door?
Privacy is the one with the inside push button or turn and an emergency release outside. The X76 is the privacy or bed and bath function, non-keyed. If the door just needs to latch with no locking at all, such as a hall or closet, a passage function is what you want instead, like the Corbin Russwin CL3110 in Grade 1 or the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lever. Neither of those locks; both simply retract the latch from either side.
9) What is a comparable Grade 1 privacy lock to the Design Hardware X76?
For a knob instead of a lever in the same function, the Arrow MK02-TA is a Grade 1 privacy bed and bath cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. On the lighter side, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The X76 is the Grade 1 lever version, and a knob will not meet ADA where a lever is required.
10) I need to match X series levers across a building but some doors need keys. What else is in the line?
The X series shares the same chassis, trim and lever designs across functions, so a keyed function in the series will match the X76 privacy visually on adjacent openings. Keyed X series functions use a 6 pin brass cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with two keys standard, and are also prepped for a small format interchangeable core less core if the building is on an SFIC system. The X76 itself is non-keyed.
11) Does the X76 lockset work on a metal door, and are screws included?
Yes on both counts. Combination screws for wood or metal doors and frames come with the lockset, so a hollow metal door with a 2-1/8 inch crossbore and two 3/8 inch thru-bolt holes needs nothing extra in the way of fasteners. It is a commercial rated set, not a residential one.
