1) Will the Design Hardware X82 entry lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or only 1-3/4?
The X82 leaves the factory set for 1-3/4 inch doors. A 1-3/8 inch door needs shims, and the lock can be adjusted out to 2 inches thick. So it covers the common commercial 1-3/4 opening straight out of the box, and older 1-3/8 interior doors with the shim kit installed.
2) Does the X82 lever lock come with a 2-3/4 backset or can I get 2-3/8?
Standard is a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset version is available and comes with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface instead. Either way the front is self adjusting for square or beveled edge doors, so you do not need to know the door edge before ordering.
3) Will a Design Hardware X82 drop into the prep left by my old cylindrical lockset?
The X82 uses ANSI A115.2 door prep: a 2-1/8 inch crossbore with two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes. That is the standard commercial bored prep, so if the door already carries an A115.2 cylindrical lock at the same backset, the X82 goes in without new boring. The strike is a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA square corner, which is also the standard commercial frame prep. T strike and full lip strikes are available if the frame is prepped differently.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Design Hardware X82 flat lever?
No handing needed on the flat lever. The X82 chassis is non-handed and completely reversible, so one part number works on a left or right hand door. Handing only comes into play if you switch to the S-A or S-B lever styles, which are handed.
5) Can I key a Design Hardware X82 into my existing Schlage C master key system?
The keyway is Schlage C. The conventional version ships with a 6 pin brass cylinder in C keyway and two keys, so a locksmith can key it into an existing C keyway system. If you run small format interchangeable cores across the building, order the SFIC prep version, which comes prepared for a small format IC core less core, and drop your own cores in.
6) What does entrance function mean on the X82, and is it the right lock for an office door?
Entrance function on the X82 is a single cylinder keyed lock: key outside, and the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 1/2 inch projection and is deadlocking on keyed functions, so the bolt cannot be carded back once the door is closed against the strike. That combination is what an office or tenant entry door wants. If the opening needs a lock that stays locked outside at all times, an entrance function is the wrong pick and a storeroom function such as the Cal-Royal AG05 is the one to look at.
7) Is the Design Hardware X82 lever lock approved for a fire rated door?
Yes. The X82 is UL Listed for A label 3 hour fire doors, meets ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, and meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes. For a facility standardizing on Grade 1 fire door hardware with a compliant lever, that set of listings is what a code official will be checking.
8) My tenants keep hanging on the levers and they sag. Will this lock hold up?
Two things in the X82 address exactly that. The lever return uses an anti-sag mechanism with independent lever return springs, so the lever does not droop over time. On locking functions the levers clutch, meaning a lever forced when locked spins free instead of transmitting the torque into the chassis. The chassis itself is steel, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance, and the trim is 5 inch solid zinc diecast levers on 3-3/8 inch wrought brass roses.
9) Do I need to order keyed alike if I am putting several X82 locks on one building?
Keying is a required choice when ordering. Keyed different is standard, meaning each lock gets its own key. If you want one key to open several openings, pick keyed alike on the order. Decide that up front, because it is set at the factory and changing it later means rekeying at a locksmith.
10) Should I buy a Grade 1 lever like the X82 or is a Grade 2 entry lever enough?
Grade 1 is the heaviest ANSI/BHMA duty rating and is what belongs on a high traffic exterior or tenant entry. The X82 is Grade 1 to ANSI A156.2 Series 4000. 14) Does the X82 lockset include mounting screws for a hollow metal door?
Combination screws ship with the lock and work in either wood or metal doors and frames, so the same box goes on a hollow metal opening or a solid core wood one. The strike included is the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA square corner.
15) Can I get the X82 with a different lever shape to match the rest of my building?
The X Series lever is offered in flat, curved, half curved, S-A and S-B designs, all on the same Grade 1 chassis. Flat is what the X82 carries as standard. Keep in mind the S-A and S-B styles are handed, so those need the door hand specified; the other three do not.
