Design Hardware DH-J-82-F-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Design Hardware J82 entry lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or is it only for 1-3/4?
The J82 comes factory set for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the chassis adjusts to cover anything from 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inches thick. So older interior doors at 1-3/8 and thicker commercial slabs at 2 inches are both in range, no separate part number needed. Door prep is the standard ANSI A115.2 2-1/8 inch crossbore with two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes.
2) Is the J82 lever handed, or can I use one lock on either swing?
With the standard flat lever the J82 is non-handed and fully reversible, so one lock covers left or right hand doors. The exception is the S-A and S-B lever styles, which are handed and have to be ordered for the specific door.
3) Will the J82 latch into the strike already in my frame?
If the frame has the common commercial ASA prep you are fine. The J82 ships with a 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch ASA standard square corner strike, and the stainless latchbolt throws 1/2 inch. Full lip strikes are also available if your jamb needs one. The latch front is self adjusting for square or beveled edge doors.
4) Does the J82 come with a 2-3/4 inch backset or 2-3/8?
2-3/4 inch backset is the standard on the J82, with a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset version is available and comes with a 1 by 2-1/4 inch latchface instead. Check which crossbore centerline your door is already drilled to before you pick.
5) Can I put the J82 on a 3 hour fire rated stairwell door?
Yes. The J82 is UL Listed for "A" label 3 hour fire doors, meets ANSI A156.2 Grade 2, and meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes. The steel chassis is zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance.
6) What is the difference between the conventional cylinder and SFIC prep versions of the J82?
The conventional cylinder version ships as a 6 pin brass cylinder in Schlage C keyway with two keys, ready to hang. The SFIC prep version comes prepared for a small format interchangeable core but ships less core, so you supply the core from your own keying system. Locksmiths and facilities already running SFIC want the second one; a property manager replacing a single door usually wants the conventional.
7) Can I get several J82 locks keyed alike so one key opens all of them?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is the standard, and KA keyed alike is there for multiple locks on one key. Choose KA when you are doing a run of units or a suite of doors off a single key. All conventional cylinders are 6 pin Schlage C keyway, which is the same keyway most commercial master systems are already built on.
8) What is the closest Grade 2 commercial entry lever to the Design Hardware J82?
The Hager 2525 is the nearest match. Both are Grade 2 cylindrical entry-function lever locks for commercial openings. The J82 is factory set for 1-3/4 inch doors and adjusts from 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inch, while the Hager 2525 is listed for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. The J82 ships with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder and can also be ordered prepped for a small format interchangeable core.
9) I need an entry lever on the same Schlage C keyway as the J82 but with a 2-3/8 inch backset out of the box. What should I look at?
The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a Grade 2 lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway supplied keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, fitting doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Design Hardware J82 is standard with a 2-3/4 inch backset and also uses the Schlage C keyway, so both will key into the same system.
10) This is a high-traffic exterior opening - is there a Grade 1 lever instead of the Grade 2 J82?
The Design Hardware J82 is ANSI A156.2 Grade 2. If the specification calls for Grade 1, the Corbin Russwin CL3300 series is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever line for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 series is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever family offered in classroom and classroom security functions. Note that those two Dexter functions are keyed differently from the J82 entrance function, where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key or inside pushbutton.
11) What does the entrance function on the J82 actually do at the door?
Entrance function with a single cylinder outside. The key retracts the latch from outside, and the latchbolt is deadlocking on keyed functions so it cannot be shimmed or carded back. If you need a door that stays locked outside at all times and free egress inside, a storeroom function like the Cal-Royal AG05 or Hager 2580 is the one to look at instead. For a classroom, Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom function lever.
12) What other Grade 2 commercial entry levers could I use instead of the Design Hardware J82?
Two close equivalents we carry: the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is Grade 2 with a 6 pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Falcon B511CP6D is Grade 2 entry/office. If you need to step up to Grade 1 heavy duty on a high traffic opening, that is a different class of lock, not a swap.
13) Can the J82 be installed without thru bolts on a metal door?
Yes. The thru bolts on the J82 are removable and the lock can be installed without them, though the door is prepped for two 3/8 inch thru bolt holes if you want them for a high abuse opening. Fasteners supplied are combination screws that work on wood or metal doors and frames.
14) I need matching non-keyed passage and privacy levers for the same building. Does the J82 cover that?
The J82 is the keyed entrance function only. For passage and privacy on the same job you would pair it with another series: Hager 2510 is Grade 2 passage and Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 lever in that family, or the Cal-Royal AG series covers classroom and storeroom functions. Accentra 5301LN and Falcon B101 are other Grade 2 passage levers we stock. Lever style and finish will not match the J82 exactly, so keep function families to one brand where the look matters.
15) The opening does not need to lock from the inside - what is the non-keyed equivalent of the J82?
For a non-locking opening, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Arrow GL01 is a Grade 2 non-keyed passage lock with the Sierra lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Design Hardware J82 is a keyed single-cylinder entrance lock, so it carries a cylinder and a deadlocking latchbolt that the passage functions do not.
16) What should I use on the storeroom doors if I am putting the J82 on the entries?
The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Storeroom keeps the outside lever locked at all times with key retraction only, where the J82 entrance function lets you leave the outside lever unlocked.
17) Is a Callan Artino or Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance lever the same thing as a Design Hardware J82?
They share the entrance function but not the grade. The Callan Artino and the Cal-Royal AUS00 are both Grade 3 entrance levers, the AUS00 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Design Hardware J82 is ANSI A156.2 Grade 2, UL listed for A label 3 hour fire doors, with a steel zinc dichromated chassis and a 2-3/4 inch backset. If a commercial spec calls for Grade 2, the Grade 3 sets will not satisfy it.
18) Is a Lockey 1150 or Emtek Classic keypad leverset a substitute for the J82?
No, they are a different access method. The Lockey 1150 is a mechanical keypad lever set for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch, the Lockey 2835DC is a double combination keyless lever lock for 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Emtek Classic Keypad Leverset and Delaney LP250 are keypad lever locks as well. The Design Hardware J82 is a key-operated single cylinder entrance lever on the Schlage C keyway, so it can be keyed alike with other Schlage C cylinders across a building; the keypad sets are code-entry and are not keyed into that system.
19) Is there a knob version of the same entrance function as the J82?
The Arrow RL Series HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Design Hardware J82 is the lever equivalent and meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes, which is the deciding factor where lever operation is required by code.
20) The opening needs to release on a fire alarm signal. Is there an electrified lever to use in place of the J82?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever in 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, offered with the NZ lever and D rose. The Design Hardware J82 is a purely mechanical Grade 2 entrance lever with no electrical control, so it cannot be tied into an access control or alarm release.
21) Which finishes does the J82 flat lever come in, and will it match the satin chrome hardware on my other doors?
Stocked in 626 satin chrome (US26D) and 613 dark bronze (US10B) with the flat lever, and both cylinder options are available in each of those two finishes. Special order finishes are US3 PVD, US4, US15 and US26 PVD, with PVD being a lifetime finish. 626 satin chrome is the usual match for existing commercial satin chrome or brushed nickel trim.
22) Do these levers sag over time on a high traffic door?
The J82 uses an anti-sag mechanism with independent lever return springs specifically to stop lever droop, which is the common failure on heavy use openings. The lever itself is 5 inch solid zinc diecast on a 3-3/8 inch wrought brass rose, on a steel chassis. It is a commercial rated lock, not a residential one.
23) Can I get the J82 with a curved lever instead of the flat one?
Lever choices on the J Series are flat, curved, half curved, S-A and S-B. Flat is the standard and the one stocked in US26D and US10B. Keep in mind S-A and S-B are handed styles, so those need the door swing specified; flat, curved and half curved stay on the non-handed chassis.
24) I need a matching lever for a door that does not need any latch at all - what pairs with the J82?
For a non-latching opening such as an inactive leaf or closet face, a dummy trim is the right part. The BEST 7KC single dummy trim is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever dummy, and the BEST 9K 1DT is the Grade 1 heavy duty equivalent. The Design Hardware J82 is a keyed entrance lock with a stainless steel deadlocking latchbolt, so it is not what you want where no latch is required.
25) Are the Kwikset 200BRNL or Baldwin Estate 5103 levers alternatives to the Design Hardware J82?
Not for a commercial opening. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 passage lever for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors and the Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in passage, privacy and half dummy functions. None of those lock with a key. The Design Hardware J82 is a commercial Grade 2 keyed single cylinder entrance lever that meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes and is UL listed for A label 3 hour fire doors.
26) We use Yale Augusta trim throughout the building. Can the J82 go on the remaining openings?
It can serve the opening but the trim will not match. The Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in passage/closet function and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy, both carrying the Augusta lever design. The Design Hardware J82 uses a 5 inch solid zinc diecast flat lever on a 3-3/8 inch wrought brass rose, with curved, half curved, S-A and S-B lever styles also offered.
