1) What does the storeroom function do on a Design Hardware X86 lever lock?
Storeroom means the outside lever is always locked and only the key retracts the latch. The inside lever always turns free for egress, and there is no button or thumbturn to leave the door unsecured. That is why it lands on stock rooms, mechanical rooms, and electrical closets: the door secures itself every time it closes. The X86 is single cylinder keyed, with a deadlocking latchbolt so the latch cannot be carded.
2) Can I key the Design Hardware X86 into my existing Schlage master key system?
The X86 comes with a 6-pin brass cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with two keys, so it drops into a C keyway system directly. If you run small format interchangeable core, order the SFIC prep version instead, which ships less core so you can install your own. Keying is specified at order as either keyed different or keyed alike across multiple locks.
3) Will the Design Hardware X86 lever drop into an existing 161 prep without redrilling?
Yes, if the existing prep is the standard commercial one. The X86 uses ANSI A115.2 door prep, a 2-1/8 inch crossbore with two 3/8 inch thru-bolt holes, and 2-3/4 inch backset as standard with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. A 2-3/8 inch backset version is available with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch latchface. The front is self adjusting for square or beveled edge doors, so you do not have to specify the edge.
4) Will the Design Hardware X86 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It ships with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch ASA strike with square corners, which is the standard commercial frame prep, and the stainless steel latchbolt has a 1/2 inch projection. If your frame already carries an ASA cutout, the strike swaps straight across. T strikes and full lip strikes are available if the frame is prepped differently.
5) Is the Design Hardware X86 lever lock approved for a 3 hour fire rated door?
Yes. The X86 is UL Listed for A label 3 hour fire doors and meets ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1. It also meets ADA and ANSI A117.1 accessibility codes, which matters because the lever itself satisfies the no-tight-grasping requirement that a knob does not.
6) What should I order instead of a storeroom lever if the room needs to be unlocked during the day?
Storeroom is the wrong function for that. The X86 storeroom outside lever never unlocks except by key. For a door staff should be able to leave open, an entry or office function lets you lock and unlock the outside lever from inside: the Falcon B511CP6D and the Dexter C1000 entry/office are both entry/office locks, the Dexter being Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a classroom, where the key locks the outside lever from the corridor, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever runs a 2-3/4 inch backset in the Schlage C keyway.
7) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Design Hardware X86 lever?
Not for the flat lever. The X86 chassis is non-handed and completely reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand doors. Handing only comes into it if you switch to the S-A or S-B lever styles, which are handed. For a property manager buying across a building, the flat lever means one SKU for every opening.
8) Is a Grade 1 storeroom lever worth it over a Grade 2 in a high traffic building?
Grade 1 is the top ANSI/BHMA commercial tier and the X86 meets ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 with a steel chassis, zinc dichromated for corrosion resistance.
