Detex ECL-230X – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Detex ECL-230X fit a 30 inch wide door, or only wider openings?
Both. The ECL-230X is ordered by door width, and there are two choices: a 30 inch version and one that covers 36 to 48 inches. The wider option is a single unit that spans that whole 36 to 48 inch range, so you don't pick a bar length inside it. Measure the door leaf and order the matching width option, because the pushbar has to span the leaf correctly for code compliant egress.
2) Does the Detex ECL-230X exit device come with a cylinder, or do I have to order one separately?
The cylinder is a separate line on the order and one of the choices is None, so you can supply your own. If you want it keyed from the factory, the choices are RC65 (a 6 pin rim cylinder keyed 5), IC7R (an SFIC housing for a small format interchangeable core), and IK7R (an InstaKey housing). The lock body accepts 5 pin through 7 pin standard and interchangeable core rim cylinders and takes them without a cylinder collar, so a locksmith keying the building into an existing SFIC system can drop their own core into the IC7R housing.
3) Will the ECL-230X deadbolt engage properly in my existing frame?
The bolt has a 1 inch throw and gives just over 3/4 inch of actual engagement into the frame once it is through the strike. It ships with a surface/flush reversible strike, so it can be mounted on the frame face or into a flush prep depending on what your frame gives you. Because it is a surface applied single point lock with its own strike, you are not depending on an existing lock prep in the frame.
4) Can you get into the ECL-230X door from the outside, or is it exit only?
Exit only unless you add outside trim. With no trim plate the door is a one way exit. Ordering 03T (trim plate with outside key control) or 03PP (pull plate with outside key control) gives keyed entry from the outside, and 03PP adds a pull handle for a door people come back in through. The 01T and 01PP versions are blank, no outside key control, so they cover the prep and give you a pull without ever allowing entry. That is the decision to make before ordering, since the trim choice is what determines whether the opening is egress only or a working entry.
5) Does the Detex ECL-230X alarm need to be wired to building power?
No wiring. The 100 decibel alarm runs off a 9 volt battery, and the battery is included. That is why this device gets used on remote fire exits and perimeter doors where there is no power at the opening and no budget to pull a circuit. It also means the alarm keeps working during a power outage, and the photo-luminescent sign on the device glows in the dark so the exit stays visible when the lights go down. Plan on battery access when you mount it, since the unit needs to be serviced in place.
6) How much does the Detex ECL-230X stick out from the door, and will it clear a code required egress path?
Projection is 4 inches maximum off the face of the door, which is what the International Building Code allows for hardware on an egress door. That number matters in a corridor where the door swings into the path of travel or where an inspector is measuring clear width at the opening.
7) I need to stop people propping or pulling my back exit door off its hinges. Does Detex offer hinge bolts with the ECL-230X?
Hinge bolts are an order option on the ECL-230X: DX1 for a single bolt, DX2 for double, DX3 for triple, or None. They pin the hinge edge of the leaf into the frame so the door cannot be lifted or levered off that side, which is the usual attack on a rear service exit where the lock itself is solid but the hinges are exposed. Pick the count to match the hinge stack on your door.
8) Is there a version of the Detex ECL-230X for an exterior door in a coastal or hurricane zone?
Two separate options cover that. The Weatherized option is for exterior openings exposed to the elements, and the H hurricane rating is a distinct choice that comes standard with the SN1 sex nut kit, which through bolts the device rather than relying on screws into the door skin. They are ordered independently, so a coastal exterior door can be specified weatherized and hurricane rated together. The standard lock body is corrosion resistant alloy either way.
9) Should I use an alarmed exit control lock like the ECL-230X or a regular panic exit device on my secondary exit?
They solve different problems. A standard panic device just lets people out; it does nothing to stop staff propping the door or slipping out with stock. The ECL-230X is a deadbolt panic exit control device with a 100 decibel local alarm, so the door stays locked and secure until somebody pushes the bar, and when they do everyone within earshot knows. That is the right choice for a rear stockroom door, a school perimeter exit, or a hospital controlled door where the opening must stay available for egress but should not be used casually. It is a single point lock, so it suits a single leaf with a deadbolt into the frame rather than a pair of doors needing top and bottom latching.
10) How do you shut off the Detex ECL-230X alarm after someone pushes the bar?
The alarm is reset with a control key at the device. Set the alarm configuration and test the reset function during install so the staff who will actually be silencing it know the procedure. Since the alarm sounds locally at the door and is not tied into a panel, resetting at the opening is the whole process.
11) What finish does the Detex ECL-230X exit control device come in?
Gray, and it is the only finish offered, so a facility standardizing multiple back doors on this device will get a consistent look across all of them. Everything else about the unit is configurable (width, cylinder, trim, hinge bolts, signage language), but the finish is fixed.
12) Can I get the Detex ECL-230X exit sign in Spanish?
Yes. Signage language is a required ordering choice: standard English, or RWS for Spanish. The sign itself is photo-luminescent, so whichever language you pick, it charges from ambient light and stays readable when the power drops. Worth specifying deliberately on a job in a facility where the workforce or tenants read Spanish first, since it is set at the factory.
13) Is the Detex ECL-230X rated for commercial use or is it a residential lock?
Commercial. It is built for secondary exits in retail, schools, healthcare, industrial plants, multi-tenant buildings, and government facilities, with a corrosion resistant alloy body and a saw resistant deadbolt meant to resist attack from the inside. Not a residential product and not intended for a house or apartment entry door.
14) Does the Detex ECL-230X have an inside pull handle?
Inside pull is a yes or no option when you order. The pushbar releases the bolt for egress on its own, so the inside pull is about pulling the door closed behind you rather than operating the lock. Worth adding on a heavy exterior leaf or a weatherstripped door that does not swing shut cleanly on its own.
