Dexter DCH1000-STD-FULL RW/PA AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Dexter DCH1000 door closer be mounted parallel arm on the push side, or is it hinge side only?
All three mountings are covered by the same closer. The DCH1000 is a tri-mount unit: hinge (regular) side, top jamb, or parallel arm, and the PA shoe needed for the parallel arm configuration is in the box with the Rw/PA and Hw/PA arms. The dead stop arms (DS and DS/HO) are parallel arm only, since the stop is built into that stamped arm. So if you are standardizing on push-side parallel mounting across a building, any of the four arm choices works; if you need pull-side regular arm, order Rw/PA or Hw/PA.
2) Which Dexter DCH1000 arm should I order for a door that gets slammed into a wall?
Order the Dead Stop arm. The DS arm is a stamped heavy duty parallel arm with a positive mechanical stop and a non-adjustable forearm, built for high volume traffic and abusive conditions, so the arm itself stops the door instead of the wall or an overhead stop. If you also want the door to stand open for deliveries or moving days, the DS/HO version adds a manually selective hold open on top of the same mechanical stop. The Rw/PA and Hw/PA arms use an adjustable forearm and have no stop, so they need a separate wall or floor stop.
3) Is the Dexter DCH1000 closer handed, and do I need to order left and right hand separately?
No handing to specify. Every DCH1000 arm option, regular, hold open, dead stop and dead stop hold open, is non-handed, so one closer covers both swings. That is what makes it practical to buy a case for a building and let the installer sort openings on site. What you do choose is arm function and finish: aluminum or dark bronze.
4) Will a Dexter DCH1000 land on the existing holes if I am replacing an old surface closer?
The DCH1000 uses a 6-3/4 inch by 2-3/8 inch mounting hole pattern, which is the common commercial surface closer pattern, so on a lot of retrofits it picks up the existing prep. Check the old closer's hole spacing against those two numbers before you pull it off the door. If the spacing does not match, you are drilling and tapping new holes or fitting a drop plate, not just swapping bodies. The universal hardware pack covers the fasteners for the three mounting positions.
5) Does the Dexter DCH1000 meet ADA opening force, and is it fire rated?
Two separate answers. On ADA, the DCH1000 is compliant at spring size 1, which is where you set it for an interior barrier free opening. On fire, the closer is UL and UL 10C Listed in the non-hold-open arm configurations only, so for a fire rated door assembly specify the Regular Arm (Rw/PA) or the Dead Stop arm (DS). A hold open closer is not what goes on a fire door unless it is tied to detection, and the hold open versions of this closer are outside that listing.
6) One Dexter DCH1000 for a light office door and a heavy exterior door, or different closers?
One model covers both. Spring power on the DCH1000 is field adjustable across sizes 1 through 6, so the same part number goes on a narrow interior door dialed down and on a wide, heavy exterior door dialed up. That is the reason to buy it by the case for a mixed building: you stock one closer and one finish instead of six power sizes. Sweep speed, latch speed and back-check are staked and adjusted independently, so the installer can tune each opening without one valve chasing another.
7) What is an equivalent hold open closer to the Dexter DCH1000 Hw/PA arm?
The Dexter DCH1000 Hw/PA is a non handed hold open arm with an adjustable forearm assembly that mounts hinge side, top jamb, or parallel arm, and it is offered in aluminum and dark bronze. For the same hold open function from another maker, the Accentra 51 Series is an industrial closer with hold open and tri-packed mount options in size 1-6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958HO/PA is a tri-packed hold open arm closer with a parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both give the manually selective hold open the Hw/PA gives while keeping the same three mounting choices.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer to the Dexter DCH1000 if the DCH1000 is unavailable for a project?
The Dexter DCH1000 is a Grade 1 surface closer with an adjustable spring size 1 to 6 that mounts regular (hinge side), top jamb, or parallel arm. Two peers match that combination closely: the Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer with an adjustable size 1-6 spring, and the Accentra 2701 Series is an architectural closer with tri-pack mounting options and adjustable spring sizes 1-6. Either covers the same three mounting positions and the same spring range, so the door width and weight schedule that specified the DCH1000 carries over without recalculating closer size.
9) Which surface closers use a slide track or jamb track arm instead of the Dexter DCH1000 swinging arm?
The Dexter DCH1000 uses a projecting arm in all four configurations: regular arm, hold open arm, dead stop arm, and dead stop hold open arm, with a PA shoe included for parallel arm mounting. When the opening calls for a track instead of a projecting arm, the Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm standard, pull side mounting, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 jamb track closer for frame face mounting on the pull side with an adjustable size 1-6 spring. A track arm changes the arm hardware and the mounting layout, so it is a different install from the DCH1000 tri mount pattern rather than a drop in swap.
10) Is the Cal-Royal 400 Series a substitute for the Dexter DCH1000 on a Grade 1 specified opening?
No. The Dexter DCH1000 is Grade 1, and the Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer. If the drawing or the facility standard calls for Grade 1, the 400 Series does not meet it. Within Cal-Royal, the 500S is a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back check and the 700S Series is a Grade 1 dual valve sized closer with an adjustable tube arm; both carry the Grade 1 rating the DCH1000 carries. The Falcon SC91A is another closer to watch for on a Grade 1 job, since the SC90A Series is Grade 3.
11) For an ADA barrier free opening, what compares to the Dexter DCH1000 at size 1?
The Dexter DCH1000 is ADA compliant at size 1 and its spring adjusts from 1 to 6, so one body covers the barrier free setting and heavier doors. Peers written specifically for barrier free work include the Cal-Royal 500S, a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back check, the Cal-Royal N900PBF in the 900 Series, a Grade 1 barrier free hydraulic surface closer, and the Calibre CA4001, a Grade 1 adjustable spring tension ADA hydraulic closer. The Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 ADA surface mount closer with a tri-pack arm and a size 2-5 spring, which starts above the size 1 setting the DCH1000 reaches.
12) Is the Dexter DCH1000 heavy duty enough for a school or apartment entrance?
It is a Grade 1 commercial closer with a single piece cast aluminum body, which is the duty level normally specified for institutional and multi-family traffic. Back-check is adjustable, so on a windy exterior opening you can slow the door before it reaches the frame. For the hardest use, pair the Grade 1 rating with the DS arm, since the mechanical stop takes the abuse instead of the hydraulic body.
13) What finishes does the Dexter DCH1000 closer come in, and does the cover come with it?
Aluminum (AL) and dark bronze (DB), and both are offered with all four arm functions. A full metal cover is included rather than sold separately, so the body is concealed on the finished opening. If your spec calls for a less-cover closer to save cost on a back-of-house door, that is a different part, for example the Arrow DCN325, which is a less-cover Grade 1 surface closer with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm and adjustable spring size 1 to 6.
14) What else could I buy instead of the Dexter DCH1000 in a Grade 1 tri-mount closer?
Several direct alternatives sit in the same class. The Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer with adjustable size 1 to 6 spring. The Accentra 2701 Series is a tri-pack architectural closer, also size 1 to 6, with a non-hold-open arm. The Falcon SC71A is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer. If you want a heavier body than the DCH1000's cast aluminum, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron heavy duty Grade 1 closer. All are surface mounted commercial closers; the split is duty level and which arm functions each line offers.
15) Will the Dexter DCH1000 work on a narrow aluminum storefront door?
A tri-mount cast body closer like the DCH1000 is meant for standard commercial hollow metal and wood doors, and top jamb mounting on a narrow storefront header often will not give you the room. For aluminum storefront specifically, the Norton Rixson 1600 Series aluminum storefront closer is the Grade 1 heavy duty unit built for that application with tri-style mounting. Measure your top rail and frame reveal before committing either way.
16) I need a closer for a light traffic interior office door, not a heavy duty one. What is a lighter alternative to the Dexter DCH1000?
The Dexter DCH1000 is a heavy duty commercial closer with a single piece cast aluminum body and a size 1 to 6 spring. For a light traffic interior opening, the BEST SL6000 Series is a Grade 1 light duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes, and the Arrow DC314 in the DC300 Series is a Grade 1 light duty surface mounted closer. The LCN 1250 Series is another light duty option, with sizes 1-5, all weather fluid, and ADA compliance. All three are sized for lower traffic openings than the DCH1000 is built for.
17) The Dexter DCH1000 comes with a full cover. Which comparable closers ship without one?
The Dexter DCH1000 is supplied with a full cover over the cast aluminum body. Two Arrow closers are built less cover: the DCN314 is a Grade 1 surface closer, less cover, regular/parallel arm tri-pack with adjustable spring size 1-4, and the DCN325 is the same less cover tri-pack arrangement with adjustable spring size 1-6. If the exposed body is acceptable, the DCN325 matches the DCH1000 size 1 to 6 spring range; if a finished cover is wanted, the Design Hardware 316 Series is a tri-packed closer supplied with a cover.
18) The Dexter DCH1000 dead stop arm handles abusive openings. What else is built for that kind of traffic?
The DCH1000 DS arm is a non handed, stamped, heavy duty parallel arm with a positive mechanical stop and a non adjustable forearm, intended for high volume traffic or potentially abusive installation conditions, and the DS/HO version adds manually selective hold open. Peers built at that duty level include the BEST EHD9000 Series, an extra heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-6, the BEST HD8000 Series heavy duty Grade 1 closer, and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer with adjustable spring power. The Norton Rixson 1600 Series in the 1600BC configuration is a heavy duty Grade 1 tri-style mounting closer for aluminum storefront.
19) Does the Dexter DCH1000 offer a delayed action option, and what should I order if the opening needs one?
The Dexter DCH1000 arm choices are regular (Rw/PA), hold open (Hw/PA), dead stop (DS), and dead stop hold open (DS/HO), with staked independent adjustments for sweep speed, latch speed, and back check. Delayed action is a separate function. For an opening that needs it, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958DA/PA is a delayed action closer with a regular arm and parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the BHDC2011DA/PA is the same delayed action regular arm and parallel bracket arrangement in the BHDC2011 Series.
20) Which closers cover only spring size 1-4 and would not match a Dexter DCH1000 sized above 4?
The Dexter DCH1000 spring adjusts across sizes 1 to 6, so it covers wider and heavier doors than a 1-4 closer reaches. The Accentra 1101BF is an industrial closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-4 and tri-pack mounting, the Arrow DCN314 is a Grade 1 less cover tri-pack closer with adjustable spring size 1-4, and the Dormakaba 7414 is a Grade 1 medium duty closer in size 1-4. If a DCH1000 on the job is set at 5 or 6, match it with a 1-6 closer such as the Accentra 2701 Series or the BEST EHD9000 Series rather than one of the 1-4 bodies.
21) If a projecting arm will not clear the frame, is there a flat arm closer instead of the Dexter DCH1000?
All four Dexter DCH1000 arm choices project from the body, with an adjustable forearm assembly on the Rw/PA and Hw/PA to take up a range of frame reveal conditions. Where a flat arm is wanted instead, the Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 689 is a Grade 1 closer with a flat non hold open arm supplied tri-pack, and the Dorma 8916-JT carries a flat non hold open arm with jamb track mounting. Both are Grade 1 and heavy duty, matching the grade the DCH1000 carries.
22) I am standardizing closers across a building on Falcon. Which Falcon series lines up with the Dexter DCH1000?
The Dexter DCH1000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cast aluminum surface closer with a size 1 to 6 spring. In the Falcon line, the SC71A Series is the heavy duty Grade 1 surface mount closer, the SC81A Series is a Grade 1 medium duty cast aluminum closer, and the SC61A Series is Grade 1 in light to medium duty cast aluminum. The SC71A sits at the same duty level as the DCH1000; the SC91A is Grade 3 light duty and belongs to a different tier of opening.
23) Does the Arrow DCN500DP drop plate work with the Dexter DCH1000?
No. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate made for the Arrow DCN500, not a closer and not a Dexter mounting accessory. The Dexter DCH1000 uses a 6-3/4 inch by 2-3/8 inch mounting hole pattern and ships with a universal hardware pack and a PA shoe for parallel arm installation, so the parallel arm configuration is covered by what comes in the carton.
24) What Grade 1 medium duty closers sit between the Dexter DCH1000 and a light duty unit?
The Dexter DCH1000 is a heavy duty Grade 1 closer with a size 1 to 6 spring. For openings that want Grade 1 but not heavy duty construction, the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 medium duty adjustable surface closer for medium traffic commercial applications, the BEST HD7000 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty closer with adjustable spring power and backcheck control, the Norton Rixson 1601P in the 1600 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty tri-mount closer with 180 degree swing, and the Dormakaba 7303 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty surface mounted closer. The 1601P keeps the same three mounting positions as the DCH1000.
25) Can I adjust the closing speed and latch speed on the Dexter DCH1000 separately?
Yes, and they are independent. Sweep speed, latch speed and back-check each have their own staked adjustment valve on the DCH1000, so you can slow the sweep for an ADA opening without losing the latch speed that pushes the door into the strike. Back-check is the third valve, and it is what protects the door and closer when someone throws an exterior door open in the wind. Spring power is a separate adjustment again, sized 1 through 6.
26) Is there a cast iron bodied closer instead of the Dexter DCH1000 aluminum body?
The Dexter DCH1000 uses a single piece cast aluminum body. Where a cast iron body is preferred, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer with cast iron construction, and the LCN 1261 in the 1260 Series is a light to medium duty surface closer with cast iron construction and adjustable spring sizes 1-5. Among aluminum bodied peers, the Sargent 1331 is a Grade 1 medium duty closer with a universal aluminum body and the LCN 1450 is a medium duty closer with cast aluminum construction and spring sizes 1-6.
27) Are the Stanley Security 327 and 341 alternatives to the Dexter DCH1000?
No. The Stanley Security 327 is a heavy wardrobe pivot for 1-3/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch doors up to 150 pounds and the 341 is a wardrobe pivot for flush recessed or overlay doors 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch; both are pivots that carry and swing a door, not hydraulic closers. The Dexter DCH1000 is a surface mounted hydraulic closer with staked independent sweep speed, latch speed, and back check adjustment. If the search was for a Stanley closer, the A45-501HL is a long hold open arm standard, top jamb closer in the D-455 series.
