Dexter DCH4000-STD-FULL-RW/PA-DB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Dexter DCH4000 closer be mounted parallel arm on the push side, or only hinge side?
All three mountings are covered by one unit. The DCH4000 mounts hinge (regular) side, top jamb, or parallel arm, and the PA shoe needed for the parallel arm configuration ships with the Rw/PA regular arm and Hw/PA hold-open arm versions. The regular and hold-open arms are non-handed with an adjustable forearm assembly, so one closer handles a range of frame reveal conditions without ordering a handed part. The dead stop arms (DS and DS/HO) are parallel arm only.
2) Which Dexter DCH4000 arm should I pick for a door that keeps getting slammed into the wall?
Take the Dead Stop Arm (DS). It is a stamped heavy duty parallel arm with a positive mechanical stop built in, meant for high volume traffic or abusive installation conditions, and its forearm is non-adjustable so it cannot be knocked out of setting. If you also want the door to stand open for deliveries or moving days, the Dead Stop Hold-Open Arm (DS/HO) adds a manually selective hold open to the same mechanical stop. The regular Rw/PA arm has no stop, so you would still need a separate wall or floor stop.
3) Does the Dexter DCH4000 have to be sized for the door width, or is one closer good for all my openings?
One closer covers the range. Spring power on the DCH4000 is field adjustable from size 1 through 6, so the same unit goes on a narrow interior door and a wide heavy exterior door, and a property manager can stock one part number across a building. Set it at size 1 for ADA compliant opening force; the closer is ADA compliant at size 1.
4) Is the Dexter DCH4000 door closer fire rated for a labeled door?
UL and UL 10C Listed, on the non-hold open arms only. That means the Rw/PA regular arm and the DS dead stop arm carry the listing; the hold-open versions (Hw/PA and DS/HO) do not, and a mechanical hold open does not belong on a labeled fire door anyway. It is also a Grade 1 closer, the top ANSI/BHMA cycle and duty tier for commercial door closers.
5) Will the Dexter DCH4000 line up with the holes from the closer I am taking off?
Check the two mounting screw centers on the old body: the DCH4000 uses a 5 x 2-1/4 inch mounting hole pattern, which is the common commercial surface closer footprint. If the existing closer matches that pattern, the new body picks up the same holes and you are only dealing with the arm and shoe. If it does not, plan on drilling and tapping the door or frame, or using a drop plate to cover the old prep. A universal hardware pack comes with the closer.
6) I need a door closer that holds the door open but is also on a fire door. Can I use the Dexter DCH4000 hold open?
No. The UL and UL 10C listing on the DCH4000 applies to the non-hold open arms only, so the Hw/PA and DS/HO hold-open versions are not the part for a labeled fire door. Use the Rw/PA regular arm or the DS dead stop arm there. If the opening genuinely needs to stand open and still close on alarm, that calls for an electrified hold open or a closer/holder tied to the fire alarm, not a mechanical hold open arm.
7) What is the closest equivalent to a Dexter DCH4000 door closer from another manufacturer?
The Norton Rixson 8501A is the nearest match on paper: it is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer with an adjustable size 1-6 spring, the same adjustable range the DCH4000 covers. The Accentra 2701 Series is also close, a tri-packed non-hold open arm closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-6. If the opening calls for a hold-open arm out of the box, the Accentra 51 Series is a tri-packed hold open arm closer sized 1-6. All three mount regular, top jamb or parallel like the DCH4000 does, so the door prep decision does not change when you swap.
8) The DCH4000 dead stop arm is not enough for our high abuse entrance. What heavier closer should I specify?
The DCH4000 dead stop arm is a stamped heavy duty parallel arm with a positive mechanical stop, built for high volume traffic. If the opening needs a heavier closer body behind that arm, the BEST EHD9000 Series is an extra heavy-duty Grade 1 surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-6, and the BEST HD8000 Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer. The Sargent 1431 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer with adjustable spring power, and the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer in a cast iron body rather than aluminum.
9) I need delayed action closing on a door for accessibility. Does the DCH4000 do that, or is there another closer that does?
The DCH4000 has staked, independent adjustments for sweep speed, latch speed and back-check, which is the standard three-valve set. It does not include a delayed action valve. Where delayed action is required, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958DA/PA is a delayed action closer with a regular arm and parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Orca Hardware BHDC2011DA/PA is a delayed action closer, also regular arm with parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors.
10) Our project spec calls for Grade 1 barrier free. Does the DCH4000 meet that, and what else qualifies?
The DCH4000 is Grade 1, UL and UL 10C listed on non-hold open arms, and ADA compliant at size 1, with the spring adjustable across sizes 1 to 6. Other Grade 1 barrier free options are the Cal-Royal 500S, a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check, and the Cal-Royal N900PBF from the 900 Series, a barrier free Grade 1 hydraulic surface closer. The Calibre CA4001 is a Grade 1 hydraulic closer with adjustable spring tension for ADA, and the Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 ADA surface mount closer with a tri-pack arm sized 2-5.
11) Can I adjust closing speed and latch speed separately on the Dexter DCH4000?
Three independent staked valves: sweep speed, latch speed, and back-check. Sweep controls the main swing, latch controls the last few degrees so the door actually latches instead of bouncing, and back-check catches the door before someone throws it into the wall on a windy entrance. Staked valves will not back all the way out and fall free during adjustment, which is the usual way a closer starts leaking on a maintenance call.
12) Is a cast aluminum closer body strong enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
The DCH4000 body is single piece cast aluminum, Grade 1, and rated commercial rather than residential. Single piece matters more than the alloy: there is no seam to weep fluid from. If you specifically want cast iron on an abusive exterior opening, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron heavy duty Grade 1 closer, and the LCN 1261 is cast iron in a light to medium duty range.
13) Do I need to order a drop plate or bracket separately with the Dexter DCH4000?
The DCH4000 ships with a universal hardware pack, and the Rw/PA and Hw/PA arms include the PA shoe for parallel arm mounting, so a standard install needs nothing extra. A drop plate is only in play when the frame stop or head rail is too shallow to take the shoe, or when you are covering an old prep. Those are opening-specific, so measure the top rail and the frame face before adding one.
14) What is the difference between the Dexter DCH4000 and a slide track or jamb track closer?
The DCH4000 uses a projecting arm, either a regular arm with adjustable forearm or a heavy duty parallel arm with a dead stop, so the arm stands off the door and gives you the mechanical advantage that comes with the full size 1-6 spring range. A track closer keeps a flatter, lower profile look and confines the arm to a track. If a track arm is what the drawing calls for, the Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm standard, pull side mounting, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 jamb track closer, frame face mount, pull side, adjustable size 1-6.
15) What is a medium duty alternative to the DCH4000 for interior corridor doors?
Between the light duty units and the heavy duty ones, the Sargent 1331 is a Grade 1 medium duty surface closer with a universal aluminum body, the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 medium duty adjustable surface closer intended for medium-traffic commercial openings, and the Falcon SC81A is a Grade 1 medium duty cast aluminum surface closer. The LCN 1450 is a medium duty surface closer with a cast aluminum body and spring sizes 1-6, the same spring range the DCH4000 adjusts across.
16) Is an Arrow DCN325 the same closer as a Dexter DCH4000?
They share the adjustable spring range and the tri-pack arm, but they are not the same closer. The Arrow DCN325 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm and adjustable spring size 1 to 6, supplied less cover, and it is a light duty unit. The DCH4000 is a Grade 1 commercial closer with a size 1 to 6 spring and a full cover. If the cover is part of your finish requirement, the DCN325 needs one added; the shorter-range Arrow DCN314 is the same less-cover build with a size 1 to 4 spring.
17) Which closers are direct substitutes for a DCH4000 if my building standard is a hold-open arm on every door?
The DCH4000 covers hold-open two ways: the Hw/PA arm, a non-handed hold open arm with adjustable forearm, and the DS/HO arm, a heavy duty parallel hold-open with a positive mechanical stop and manually selective hold open. Cross-brand, the Accentra 51 Series is a tri-packed hold open arm closer with size 1-6 adjustment, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958HO/PA is a tri-packed hold open arm closer for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Stanley Security A45-501HL is a long hold open arm closer configured for top jamb mounting.
18) I am putting a closer on an aluminum storefront door. Is a DCH4000 the right pick?
The DCH4000 will mount regular, top jamb or parallel and ships with the PA shoe for the parallel configuration, but it is a general commercial closer rather than a storefront specific one. The Norton Rixson 1600 Series in the 1600BC build is a Grade 1 heavy duty aluminum storefront door closer with tri-style mounting, and the Norton Rixson 1601P is a Grade 1 medium duty tri-mount surface closer rated for 180 degree swing, which matters where a storefront door swings out to a wall.
19) What Grade 1 closer can I standardize on across a facility if I want one model with the widest spring range?
The DCH4000 adjusts across spring sizes 1 to 6, which covers interior offices through exterior entrances on one part number, in aluminum or dark bronze. Peers with the same 1-6 adjustable range are the Norton Rixson 8501A, a Grade 1 tri-mount closer, the Accentra 2701 Series, a Grade 1 range architectural closer with tri-pack mounting, the BEST EHD9000 Series extra heavy-duty Grade 1 closer, and the Imperial USA TC4300 Series, a heavy duty size 1-6 ADA closer. Any of those lets a facility carry one closer model instead of stocking several fixed sizes.
20) Can I hit the same door prep as a DCH4000 with a Corbin Russwin or Design Hardware closer?
The DCH4000 uses a 5 x 2-1/4 inch mounting hole pattern, so the practical question on a retrofit is whether the replacement lands on those same holes. Among the peers, the Corbin Russwin DC3200 is a Grade 1 regular arm surface closer for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the DC6200 and DC8200 are Grade 1 double lever regular arm surface closers for pull side mounting on 1-3/4 inch doors. The Design Hardware 116, 316 and 416 Series are tri-packed non-hold open arm closers, so each can be mounted regular, top jamb or parallel the way the DCH4000 is. Verify the hole pattern against the door before committing on any of them.
21) Is a Cal-Royal 400 Series closer equal to the Dexter DCH4000?
Not on grade. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic door closer, while the DCH4000 is Grade 1. If the drawing calls out Grade 1, the 400 Series will not satisfy it; the Cal-Royal 700S Series is Grade 1, a dual valve sized closer with an adjustable tube arm, and the Cal-Royal 500S is a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check.
22) What finishes does the Dexter DCH4000 surface closer come in?
Two: AL aluminum and DB dark bronze, and both are offered across all four arm functions (regular Rw/PA, hold-open Hw/PA, dead stop DS, and dead stop hold-open DS/HO). Aluminum matches most storefront and aluminum entrance work; dark bronze matches bronze anodized frames and darker interior packages. The cover is a full cover, so the body is concealed rather than left as a bare cylinder.
23) Is an Arrow DCN500DP parallel drop plate a substitute for the DCH4000 parallel arm shoe?
No, and the two are not interchangeable. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate made for the Arrow DCN500 closer, not a closer itself. The DCH4000 includes its PA shoe in the box to allow installation in a parallel arm configuration, along with a universal hardware pack, so no separate plate is ordered to mount it parallel.
24) Are the Deltana DC40 and DC70 alternatives to a Dexter DCH4000?
They are different animals. The Deltana DC10, DC40, DC50 and DC70 are each a single fixed door closer series. The DCH4000 is a commercial closer with one spring adjustable across sizes 1 to 6 and a tri-mount arm that goes hinge side, top jamb or parallel, so a single part number covers a range of door widths and weights instead of picking a fixed model per opening.
