1) Will the Dexter DCR8000 door closer work if I need to mount it on the push side of the door?
Yes. The DCR8000 with the regular arm (Rw/PA) is a tri-mount closer, so it installs hinge side, top jamb, or parallel arm. The PA shoe is in the box, so the parallel-arm setup on the push side needs no extra bracket ordered. The forearm assembly is adjustable to suit different frame reveal conditions, and the arm is non-handed, so the same unit goes on a left or right hand door.
2) I need a door closer that holds the door open. Does the Dexter DCR8000 do that?
No. The DCR8000 with the regular arm is a non-hold-open closer, and hold-open is not an arm option on it. For a hold-open arm, look at the Accentra 51 Series, which is a tri-packed hold open arm with sizes 1-6, or the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 in the HO/PA configuration for a 1-3/4 inch door. Keep in mind hold-open is not permitted on a fire rated opening unless it releases on alarm.
3) Can I use the Dexter DCR8000 on a fire rated door?
The DCR8000 is UL and UL 10C Listed with non-hold-open arms. The regular arm (Rw/PA) is a non-hold-open arm, so it fits that listing. Hold-open is not an option to add here, and it should not be on a fire door anyway, since a fire door has to self-close and latch.
4) Will a Dexter DCR8000 line up with the holes already drilled for my old closer?
The DCR8000 uses a 9-1/16 inch by 3/4 inch mounting hole pattern. Measure the existing shell holes on the door: if they match that pattern you can reuse the prep, otherwise you are drilling new holes or fitting a filler plate. A universal hardware pack comes with the closer, so screws and fasteners for the three mounting positions are included.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Dexter DCR8000 tri-mount closer from another brand?

If the specification calls for Grade 1, neither of those meets it. Stay with Grade 1 peers such as the Cal-Royal 500S barrier free closer or the Falcon SC81A medium duty cast aluminum closer.
8) Does the Dexter DCR8000 closer come with a cover?
No cover ships with it. The DCR8000 in this configuration is a less-cover unit, with a cover available separately, so what you get is the bare cast aluminum body. That is normal on back-of-house, stairwell, and utility openings where nobody is looking at the closer. If the opening is a lobby or a tenant-facing corridor where appearance matters, order the cover along with it.
9) What adjustments can I make on a Dexter DCR8000 after it is installed?
Three independent hydraulic valves: sweep speed, latch speed, and back-check.
