Don-Jo 4-S-2-CW – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I know if I need the 2-3/4 inch backset wrap around or the 2-3/8 inch one?
Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the lever hole. If that is 2-3/4 inches, the 4-2-CW is the right plate; its lever hole prep is punched at a 2-3/4 inch backset so the hole lands over your existing bore. Measure 2-3/8 inches instead and you need the 2-3/8 backset version, because the hole will not line up on this one. Commercial openings with mortise or heavier bored locks are usually 2-3/4; 2-3/8 shows up more on lighter residential-style hardware.
2) I have 40 apartment doors with beat-up lock areas. Can I standardize on one wrap around plate?
If those doors are all 1-3/4 inch thick with 2-3/4 inch backset levers, yes, the 4-2-CW covers the whole fleet with a single part number. Pick one of the five finishes and every door reads the same. Where it breaks down is mixed door thickness or mixed backsets, which is common in a building that has been re-hardwared over the years, so walk a few doors and measure the edge-to-center dimension before you order the full quantity.
3) Does the Don-Jo 4-2-CW work with a knob, or only a lever?
The prep is a lever hole, punched to clear lever-style trim. A round knob rose will pass through a lever hole as well since the lever cutout is the larger opening, but the plate is cut for lever hardware and that is the fit it is drawn for. If your doors are on knobs and you want the cutout to close up tight around the rose, the knob-prep wrap around is the closer match.
4) Is 22 gauge steel heavy enough for a high traffic commercial door?
22 gauge (.032) steel is the standard weight for this class of wrap around, and it is what the 4-2-CW is built from. It is thin enough to wrap the door edge and sit flat under the lock trim without shimming, and stiff enough to take the daily abuse a corridor or entry door sees. It is a cover plate, not a reinforcement, so it hides and protects the face of the door but does not add strength to the lock prep itself.
5) Does the wrap around clear the latch, or do I have to cut it?
No cutting. The 4-2-CW has a latch prep indent formed into the edge wrap, so the plate seats over the door edge with the latch face passing through. Pull the lever trim and the latch faceplate, slip the plate on, and reinstall over the top.
6) What is the difference between the 4-2-CW and the 4-2-V from Don-Jo?
Same plate, different packaging. The CW suffix is the standard box, 4-1/2 by 9-3/4 inches, sold individually. Swap the CW for V after the item number and you get the display package, 5-1/4 by 11 inches, which is what a retail counter or a hardware aisle wants. If the plates are going straight to a job or a maintenance shop, order the CW.
7) Will one Don-Jo 4-2-CW cover both sides of the door?
It covers one face plus the edge. A wrap around plate is 4-3/4 inches wide and folds over the door edge, so it lands on the face where the damage is and hides the edge as it goes. If both sides of the door are scarred, order two, one for each face. Levers and roses come off, plate goes on, trim goes back over it.
8) What finishes does the Don-Jo 4-2-CW wrap around come in?
Five: 10B oil rubbed bronze (613), AB antique brass (609), BZ satin bronze (612), PB polished brass (605), and S satin stainless (630). Satin stainless 630 is the one that matches most commercial lever and exit hardware; the brass and bronze options are there for older buildings where the existing trim is not stainless.
