Dormakaba MN002ETNBTNB1100R – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I interconnected lockset fit a 2-3/8 inch backset, or is it 2-3/4 only?
Both backsets are built. The Saffire LX-I is ordered with either a 2-3/8 inch or a 2-3/4 inch backset, and 2-3/4 inch is the catalogued spec. Those are the two standard bored-lock backsets, so the lock matches either existing prep. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing lever bore and specify to it, because backset is fixed at the time of order on this lock, not adjustable in the field.
2) What center line spacing does the Saffire LX-I need between the lever and the deadbolt?
Two spacings are offered on the Saffire LX-I: 4 inch and 5.5 inch center line. On an interconnected lockset that number is the distance between the center of the lever bore and the center of the deadbolt bore, and it has to match the holes already in the door. Get it wrong and the lock will not land on the existing prep. Measure bore center to bore center on the door you are replacing, then order that center line. Backset (2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch) is a separate choice and both are available.
3) How do I order handing on a Dormakaba Saffire LX-I, and can it be reversed in the field?
Handing is specified at the time of order, not swapped later. Two handings are built: L covers left hand and right hand reverse doors, R covers right hand and left hand reverse. Stand outside the opening, on the key side. If the hinges are on your left and the door swings away from you, that is left hand; hinges left and the door pulls toward you is left hand reverse. Match that to the L or R option before you order, since the lever and reader assembly is built to the hand.
4) Does the Saffire LX-I work with the strike already in my frame, or do I have to change it?
Strike is a choice, which is what makes the retrofit work. The Saffire LX-I is ordered with either an ASA strike or a T strike, and the catalogued strike is a 2-3/4 inch T strike. If your frames are wood or have a T-shaped cutout, take the T strike and you keep the existing mortise. If the frames are hollow metal with the taller rectangular ASA cutout, order the ASA strike. Look at the frame before you order rather than the door, because that is the part you cannot easily change on an occupied unit.
5) What else do I need to buy to run Dormakaba Saffire LX-I locks on my property?
The lock alone does not manage itself. Saffire LX locks are supported by dormakaba's Community access management software, which is sold separately and is what you use to issue and revoke credentials and manage the property remotely. Budget for it on the order. Credentials are the other line item: the series issues mobile, fob, wristband or keycard credentials, so decide which of those your residents get. Lock firmware updates come over the air once the system is running, and the platform integrates with third-party energy management, video, visitor management, IOT and resident communication systems.
6) What is a mechanical alternative to the Saffire LX-I if I do not want an electronic access system?
Two keyed interconnected locks cover that. The Schlage CS210-B500 is a Grade 2 heavy duty entrance single locking interconnected lockset, and the Deltana CL300ILC is a Grade 2 entry interconnected lock with the Clarendon lever. Both give you the same interconnected function, lever and deadbolt retracting together from the inside, with a key cylinder instead of a credential reader. Going mechanical means no software subscription and no lock programming, but also no remote credential issue or revoke and no over-the-air updates, which is the trade a property manager is really making.
7) What mechanical interconnected lockset covers the same opening as the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I when credentials and management software are not wanted?
The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I is an electronic interconnected lockset built around a sealed contactless RFID reader, with mobile, fob, wristband, or keycard credentials and over-the-air lock updates. For a keyed mechanical interconnected lock on the same kind of entry opening, the Schlage CS210-B500 is a Grade 2 entrance single locking interconnected lockset in the CS210 Series at a heavy duty rating, and the Deltana CL300ILC is a Grade 2 interconnected lock with entrance function on the Clarendon lever. The Saffire LX-I meets BHMA Grade 2 certification, so all three sit at the same certification grade; what changes is that the CS210-B500 and CL300ILC are operated with a key rather than a credential, and neither carries the reader electronics or the software-managed side of the Saffire.
8) The door is a classroom or office opening rather than a unit entry with a deadbolt. What should be used instead of the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I?
The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I is an interconnected lockset, meaning the entry latch and a deadbolt are combined on one opening, and it ships with a 2-3/4 inch T strike or an ASA strike and a 1 inch or 1-1/8 inch wide deadbolt. An opening that takes a single cylindrical lock with no deadbolt is a different prep. The Schlage S270 is a Grade 2 cylindrical keyed lever lock in the S200 Series at a heavy duty rating with classroom function, which locks and unlocks the outside lever by key while the inside lever always retracts the latch. Both carry Grade 2, so a facility standardizing on that certification level can run the S270 on classroom and office doors and the Saffire LX-I on the entries that need a deadbolt and credential access.
9) Can a Schlage Residential FC94 handleset with Latitude lever and Collins trim be used in place of a Dormakaba Saffire LX-I?
No. The Schlage Residential FC94 LAT COL is an inside dummy handleset, which is trim that mounts to the door face and does not operate a latch or lock anything. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I is an electronic interconnected lockset for commercial use, handed left or right, with a working latch and deadbolt and a contactless RFID reader. A dummy handleset can only sit on an inactive leaf or serve as a pull; it cannot secure the opening the Saffire LX-I is securing. If the goal is matching appearance on an adjacent inactive door, the FC94 LAT COL is a dummy trim for that purpose, but it is not a substitute lock.
10) What deadbolt width should I specify on the Saffire LX-I interconnected lock?
Two deadbolt widths are built: 1 inch wide, which is the standard, and 1-1/8 inch wide. The bolt has to enter the pocket already cut in the frame, so on a retrofit pull the old lock and measure the existing bolt before choosing. On new prep, the 1 inch standard deadbolt is the default build. This is a single-cylinder interconnected lockset, so the deadbolt and the latch both retract with one motion of the inside lever.
11) Can residents use a phone to open a Saffire LX-I, or is it card only?
Phone works. The Saffire LX is a mobile access enabled lock with a sealed, built-in contactless RFID reader, and credentials can be issued as mobile, fob, wristband or keycard. That mix matters on a mixed-age resident population: you can hand a phone credential to one unit and a fob or wristband to the next without stocking a second lock. The reader is sealed and built into the lock body rather than being a separate wall reader, so there is no additional device to mount on the corridor side.
12) Which Saffire LX model do I need for a unit entry door versus a stairwell or an exit door?
Pick the model by what is in the door now. LX-I is the interconnected version, a lever and a deadbolt tied together so one motion of the inside lever retracts both, which is what most apartment and condo unit entries use. If the door has a mortise lock body, that is the LX-M. A standalone deadbolt only is the LX-D. A door with a panic device on it takes the LX-P, and a latch-only opening with no deadbolt takes the LX-L. All five carry the same RFID reader and credential options, so you can mix models across a building and still run one credential set.
13) Is the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I rated for commercial multifamily traffic?
It is a commercial-duty lock and meets BHMA Grade 2 certification. Grade 2 is the standard commercial duty class for apartment and light commercial entries, sitting above residential-grade hardware and below Grade 1 heavy institutional. For unit entry doors in multifamily, student housing or senior living, that is the grade the spec normally calls for. Grade 2 is also where the mechanical interconnected locks sit, so switching a building to electronic access does not step down the hardware duty class.
14) Can I use a standard cylindrical lever lock in place of an interconnected lockset like the Saffire LX-I?
Not on the same prep. A cylindrical lever lock such as the Schlage S270, a Grade 2 classroom function keyed lever, is a single bore with no deadbolt tied to it. An interconnected lockset like the Saffire LX-I uses two bores, lever and deadbolt, at a 4 inch or 5.5 inch center line, and retracts both together. Swapping a cylindrical lock into an interconnected door leaves the deadbolt hole unfilled and drops the second point of security. If the door already has the two-bore interconnected prep, replace it with an interconnected lock. If it has a single bore, a cylindrical lever is the right part.
15) How do the Schlage CS210-B500 and the Deltana CL300ILC differ from each other as interconnected alternatives to the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I?
Both are keyed interconnected locks at Grade 2 with entrance function, the same grade the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I meets. The Schlage CS210-B500 belongs to the CS210 Series and is rated heavy duty, and it is described as a single locking interconnected lockset. The Deltana CL300ILC is supplied on the Clarendon lever. On lever appearance, the Saffire LX-I is offered with the Continental, Elevon, and Troy lever designs, so a property matching lever style across doors should compare the Clarendon and the CS210 trim against whichever of those three is going on the electronic openings.
16) Is the Schlage Residential FC58 Plymouth outside handleset an alternative to the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I on a multifamily entry?
They are built for different doors. The Schlage Residential FC58 PLY is a Plymouth outside handleset with 3 and 4 trim in the Custom FCT-Series, rated heavy duty with entrance function, and it is a residential handleset assembly. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I is a commercial electronic interconnected lockset that meets BHMA Grade 2 and reads mobile, fob, wristband, and keycard credentials, with the property side managed through Community access management software sold separately. On a single-family or townhome entry where a key is the credential and a handleset look is wanted, the FC58 PLY answers that. On a managed multifamily unit door where credentials are issued and revoked centrally, that is the work the Saffire LX-I does.
17) Which locks can be specified alongside a Dormakaba Saffire LX-I to keep a whole facility at one certification grade?
The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I meets BHMA Grade 2 certification. Three peers sit at the same Grade 2 level and cover different door functions: the Schlage CS210-B500 is a Grade 2 entrance single locking interconnected lockset in the CS210 Series at heavy duty, the Schlage S270 is a Grade 2 classroom cylindrical keyed lever in the S200 Series at heavy duty, and the Deltana CL300ILC is a Grade 2 interconnected entrance lock on the Clarendon lever. A specification that puts Saffire LX-I on credentialed entries and draws the keyed openings from that group stays at Grade 2 throughout, with the mechanical units keyed to the facility system and the Saffire units credentialed.
18) The opening takes a mortise lock or a panic device, not an interconnected lockset. What replaces the Dormakaba Saffire LX-I there?
Stay inside the Saffire LX family rather than moving to a mechanical lock. The Saffire LX series is built in mortise as the LX-M, deadbolt as the LX-D, interconnected as the LX-I, panic as the LX-P, and latch as the LX-L, so a mortise pocket or an exit device opening is covered by the LX-M or LX-P with the same RFID reader, mobile credential support, and over-the-air updates. The keyed interconnected peers, the Schlage CS210-B500 and the Deltana CL300ILC, are both interconnected entrance locks at Grade 2 and match the LX-I prep rather than a mortise or panic prep, so they are not the swap for those openings.
19) What are the finish and lever options on the Saffire LX-I, and will they match the rest of my building?
Three finishes are built: 619 satin nickel, 622 black, and 626 satin chrome. 626 satin chrome is the common commercial finish and the one most likely to match existing hardware in a corridor; 622 black suits a contemporary or renovated building. Three lever designs are offered, Continental, Elevon and Troy, so you can hold one lever shape across a property. Pick the finish off an existing door before you order a run of units, since 619 and 626 read similarly in a photo but not side by side on a frame.
