Dormakaba FG12B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the File Guard pushbutton, key lock, padlock and self-storing versions?
Four functions, and the choice is about how you want the bar released. The pushbutton version (model FG10) is a fully mechanical Simplex keypad with a single access code, no key and no battery. The key lock version (model F2580) uses a built-in 5-pin cylinder in a metal housing, in Schlage "C" or Weiser keyway. The padlock versions (models F2500 and F2570) have no lock built in at all, so you supply your own padlock. There is also a self-storing option. Pick pushbutton if you want to stop issuing keys entirely, key lock if the cabinet has to stay on an existing key system, and padlock if you already standardize on one padlock across a facility.
2) Does the Simplex File Guard need batteries or wiring?
No power at all. The File Guard is a fully mechanical pushbutton lock, so there are no batteries to replace and nothing to wire. That is the reason it gets specified for records rooms and remote cabinets where nobody is going to be checking a battery. It is programmed through the keypad itself, without taking the lock off the cabinet.
3) How does the File Guard lock a filing cabinet, and what does it actually secure?
It is a steel channel bar that runs the height of the drawer stack and blocks every drawer at once, released by a self-contained tubular deadbolt. One code or one key secures the whole cabinet, which is what turns a standard file cabinet into a security cabinet for confidential records. It is cabinet hardware, not a door lock, so it does not replace anything in a door.
4) Can I key the File Guard cabinet lock to my existing Schlage master key system?
The key lock version, model F2580, has a built-in 5-pin cylinder available in Schlage "C" or Weiser keyway, so it can be cut to a Schlage C system your facility already runs. That is the only version with a cylinder; the pushbutton and padlock models cannot be keyed into a system.
5) Does the padlock version of the File Guard come with a padlock?
No. Models F2500 and F2570 are built for a padlock but the padlock is not included, so order one separately. Anything with a shackle that clears the hasp on the bar will work, which is why facilities already standardized on one padlock keyway tend to pick this version over the keyed model.
6) How do you change the code on a Simplex File Guard pushbutton lock?
Code changes are done through the keypad with the lock still mounted on the cabinet, so no disassembly and no trip back to a bench. On model FG10 you need a screwdriver to get at the control, and it is not supplied; on model F2580 the built-in key lock serves as the control. There is one access code shared by all users, which keeps administration simple but means a code change is the way you handle staff turnover.
7) Do I need to specify left or right hand for a File Guard cabinet lock?
Handing is not a factor. The File Guard is non-handed, so the same part goes on the cabinet regardless of which side you mount it. The two things you do specify are drawer count (29, 51-1/4 or 59 inch bar) and function.
8) Is the Simplex File Guard tough enough for a public-facing office or records room?
The keypad uses solid metal pushbuttons rated vandal resistant, and the bar itself is heavy-duty steel channel, so it is built for commercial rather than home-office duty. It comes in black.
9) What finishes does the Simplex File Guard come in?
Black is the finish, listed as finish code B. There is no other option, so a row of cabinets fitted with these will match each other without you having to specify anything.
