Product Summary

Simplex Mechanical Pushbutton Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

The Simplex L1000 Series provides exterior access by combination, while allowing free egress. This mechanical lock, with lever option, eliminates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door.

Dormakaba LR1011-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to order the Simplex L1000 left hand or right hand, and can I reverse it on site?
Handing is set at the factory on the L1000 and it is not field reversible, so the hand has to be right on the purchase order. Both left hand and right hand are built in all four finishes and all three backset/latch combinations, so choosing a hand never costs you a finish or a backset. To determine it, stand outside the door on the keypad side: hinges on your left is a left hand door, hinges on your right is right hand. Order the wrong one and it is an exchange, not a screwdriver fix.
2) What backset does the Simplex L1000 use, and will it go into my existing 161 door prep?
Two backsets are built, 2-3/4 in (70 mm) and 2-3/8 in (60 mm), so match whichever your existing bore center is. The lock takes ASA 161 door preparation with additional through holes, meaning a standard 161 bored opening is the starting point but you drill extra through holes for the trim, and it goes on wood or metal doors either way. If you are replacing a cylindrical lockset already in a 161 prep, the bore and cross bore are already there; the added through holes are the only new drilling.
3) There is no key override on this Simplex L1000. What happens if someone forgets the code?
This build is combination entry only. There is no key cylinder and no mechanical bypass in the outside lever, so the code is the only way in from outside and there is nothing to master key into an existing system. Two things soften that: anyone inside always has free egress, and the code is changed at the keypad without taking the lock off the door, so you can rotate it after staff turnover without a service call. If you need a key bypass for lockouts, or you need the lock to sit on your building master, order the L1000 with key override instead.
4) Can I give each tenant or employee their own code on a Simplex L1000?
No. The L1000 holds a single access code, one code shared by everyone allowed through that door. There is no user list, no schedule, and no record of who came in. That is a fit for a mechanical room, an equipment or storage room, a roof access door, a pool or amenity door, a back-of-house entrance where the group is small and stable and you just want to stop handing out keys. If you need per-person codes or an audit trail, a mechanical pushbutton lock is the wrong tool and you want an electronic access control lock instead.
5) Can I put a Simplex L1000 pushbutton lever lock on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Only if the stile measures at least 5 in (127 mm). That is the minimum stile recommended for the L1000, and most narrow and medium stile aluminum entrances come in under it, so on a typical glass storefront door the answer is no. The lock is a bored cylindrical lockset needing an ASA 161 prep, which a narrow stile simply does not have the material for. On those doors the usual route is an exit device with a pushbutton or keypad trim on the pull side rather than a cylindrical lock.
6) Will the Simplex L1000 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The L1000 works with either a standard strike plate or an ASA strike plate, so both the common square-corner plate and a T-strike frame cutout are covered. Latch throw is 1/2 in (13 mm) on the standard build, with a 3/4 in (19 mm) throw latch available. If the door has settled, the gap between door and frame is wide, or the existing strike sits deep in the frame, order the 3/4 in throw and you get an extra quarter inch of engagement to work with.
7) Is the Dormakaba Simplex L1000 approved for a fire rated door?
The L1000 cylindrical latch carries a 3-hour UL and ULC fire rating for 'A' labeled doors, which covers the 3-hour openings in stairwells, shafts, and area separation walls. It is a Grade 1 lock, so it is specified for commercial use rather than residential. Keep in mind the rating belongs to the latch and lock, not the whole opening; the door, frame, and closer still have to carry their own labels for the assembly to hold its rating.
8) Does the Simplex L1000 pushbutton lock need batteries or power to the door?
Neither. The L1000 is fully mechanical, so there is nothing to wire, no transformer, no power transfer hinge, and no batteries to change out across a portfolio of doors. It keeps working straight through a power outage. The construction is weather resistant, so exterior doors, gate houses, and unheated outbuildings are in scope. For a property manager, the practical read is that the only recurring maintenance is changing the code when someone leaves.
9) Can I hold a Simplex L1000 unlocked during business hours so people walk in without the code?
Not with the combination-entry-only build. Every entry from outside takes the code, and there is no thumbturn or key on the inside to drop the outside lever into passage. Passage is offered on other Simplex L1000 models, where the feature is switched on from the inside with a thumbturn or key, and privacy is offered on others again, where the inside disables the code entirely. If the door needs to be free during the day and secure after hours, specify a passage-capable model rather than this one.
10) Can people still get out from the inside if they do not know the code?
Free egress is available at all times on the L1000. The combination controls entry from the outside only; the inside lever always retracts the latch, so nobody is trapped behind the door and the opening does not need a code to exit. That is what lets it go on doors in an egress path, subject to your local authority having jurisdiction signing off on the opening as a whole.
11) How well does a Simplex L1000 hold up on a high-traffic or abused exterior door?
It is a Grade 1 lock built on a heavy-duty cylindrical housing with a cast front housing and a unified trim plate, and the keypad uses vandal resistant solid metal pushbuttons rather than rubber or plastic. Substrate is brass or bronze, and the construction is weather resistant for outdoor openings. For federal and defense work it is also noted as D.O.D. 5220.22M compliant for supplemental access control, which is the line a government or contractor spec writer is usually looking for.
12) What do I have to specify when ordering a Dormakaba Simplex L1000 lever lock?
Three choices and no keying. First, handing, left or right, set at the factory. Second, the backset and latch combination: 2-3/4 in with a 1/2 in throw is the standard build, with 2-3/8 in and a 1/2 in throw, or 2-3/4 in with a 3/4 in throw, as the alternatives. Third, finish, from 626 satin chrome, 609 antique brass, 605 bright brass, or 625 bright chrome. Every combination of those three is built, so no choice locks you out of another. Because the lock is combination entry only there is no keyway, cylinder, or keying to call out.
13) Are the levers on the Simplex L1000 ADA compliant?
The L1000 uses fixed ADA-compliant levers, and Dormakaba lists the lock against the Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility standard. A lever is what gets you there: it operates without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist, which a knob does not. The keypad itself is solid metal pushbuttons, so plan the entry side around a user pressing buttons rather than turning anything.
14) What finishes does the Simplex L1000 come in so it matches the rest of my building hardware?
Four finishes. Satin Chrome 26D (626) and Antique Brass 05 (609) are the standard pair, with Bright Brass 03 (605) and Bright Chrome 026 (625) as options. All four are built in both hands and in each backset and latch throw combination, so if the rest of your openings are 626 satin chrome you can hold that finish across a mixed set of doors with different backsets. 626 is the common match for commercial lever hardware in an office or institutional building.

    Effortless Access Made Chic!

Posted by Dylan on Aug 21st 2023

The Dormakaba lock is a game-changer. Code entry is slick and glitch-free, plus no keys to lose. Looks classy too! Just be careful with the lever – it's a bit sensitive. Overall, super happy with this modern upgrade for my security.
