Dormakaba LR1021B-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Simplex L1000 pushbutton lever lock field reversible, or do I have to order the handing?
Handing has to be right on the order. The L1000 Series lever lock is factory handed and cannot be reversed in the field, so left hand and right hand are separate parts. Determine it from the outside of the door, the keypad side: if the hinges are on your right as you face that side, it is right hand. Get it wrong and the lever points the wrong way and the lock has to go back rather than be flipped on the jobsite.
2) Does the Dormakaba Simplex L1021 come with a cylinder for the key override?
No core is supplied with the lock. You pick the prep and then supply a core keyed to your existing system. Five prep options are offered: B for small format interchangeable core (Best and equivalents, 6 or 7-pin), C for Corbin Russwin large format (6-pin), M for Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy large format (5 or 6-pin), R for Sargent, and S for Schlage. For a locksmith or a facility already on a master key system, this is the point of the override: the lock takes your keyway rather than forcing a second key system on the building.
3) Will the Simplex L1000 latch reach the strike I already have in the frame?
Standard latch throw is 1/2 inch (13 mm), which suits a normal frame with a typical gap and works with either a standard strike plate or an ASA strike plate. Where the door has settled, the frame is out of square, or there is weatherstripping pushing the door off the stop, order the 3/4 inch (19 mm) throw latch instead. That longer throw is offered on the 2-3/4 inch backset; the 2-3/8 inch backset is the 1/2 inch throw only.
4) Can I use a Simplex pushbutton lever lock on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The L1000 Series wants a 5 inch (127 mm) minimum stile, and a narrow stile aluminum door runs well under that. It is also a bored cylindrical lock needing ASA 161 prep plus extra through holes, which a narrow stile will not carry. For a glass front opening you need a device built for that stile width, typically a narrow stile exit device with keypad trim or a mortise style narrow stile lock, not a bored lockset.
5) Is the Dormakaba Simplex L1021 rated for a labeled fire door?
Fire rated, yes. The cylindrical latch carries a 3-hour UL and ULC fire rating on A labeled doors. Because it is an entry function that always allows egress from the inside, it keeps the opening code-legal on a stair or corridor door where a fire assembly cannot be defeated from the egress side. A stairwell, mechanical room, or tenant back door on an A label is exactly where these go.
6) What has to be specified when ordering a Simplex L1000 pushbutton lever lock?
Four choices and one separate part. Choose backset and latch throw (2-3/4 inch with 1/2 inch throw, 2-3/4 inch with 3/4 inch throw, or 2-3/8 inch with 1/2 inch throw), finish, handing (left or right, factory set), and the key override prep (Best SFIC, Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy, Sargent, or Schlage). The cylinder core itself is a separate line item, keyed to your system. Handing and override prep are the two that cannot be corrected on site.
7) Does the Simplex pushbutton lock need batteries or wiring?
Neither. The L1000 Series is a purely mechanical pushbutton lock, so there is no battery to change, no power to run, and nothing to fail when the building loses power. That is the practical difference against an electronic keypad: no annual battery labor across a portfolio of doors, and no dead lock at 2 a.m. The trade is that everything it does is mechanical, so there is no schedule, no audit trail, and no remote management.
8) Can I give each tenant or employee their own code on a Simplex L1000?
No. The L1000 Series runs a single access code shared by everyone who uses the door. If you need per-user codes, a record of who entered, or the ability to revoke one person without changing the door, this is the wrong lock and you want an electronic access control lock. Where it does work well is a door with one crew or one group behind it, a mechanical room, storage, a roof hatch door, or a jobsite entrance, where one code is easier to manage than issuing and collecting keys.
9) How do you change the code on a Simplex L1000 lock, and does it have to come off the door?
Code changes happen at the keypad with the lock still mounted. Nothing comes apart, no cylinder is pulled, and no programming tool or software is involved. For a property manager that means turnover between tenants or after a contractor finishes is a few minutes at the door rather than a service call, which is the whole argument against reissuing and collecting keys.
10) Is the Dormakaba Simplex L1021 Grade 1 and ADA compliant for a spec job?
Grade 1, with fixed ADA-compliant levers that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirement for operation without tight grasping or twisting. Construction is a heavy-duty cylindrical housing with cast front housing and a unified trim plate. It is also D.O.D. 5220.22M compliant for supplemental access control, which matters on federal and defense-adjacent facilities. That combination is what gets it onto a hardware schedule for schools, healthcare, and government work.
11) Should I use a mechanical pushbutton lock or an electronic keypad lock on a back-of-house door?
A mechanical Simplex handles the case where the problem is keys, not access management. It removes the cost of issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards, needs no batteries or wiring, and the code changes at the keypad. What it will not do is track entries, hold different codes for different people, or lock and unlock on a schedule. So: single shared code on a mechanical room, storage, or staff entrance, mechanical wins on lifetime cost. Tenant turnover with accountability, or anything you need to audit, go electronic.
12) Will a Simplex mechanical pushbutton lock hold up on an exterior door or a high-abuse opening?
It is built for it. The keypad uses vandal resistant solid metal pushbuttons rather than a membrane or plastic keys, the lock is weather resistant, and the trim is brass or bronze substrate. Combined with the Grade 1 rating, that suits an exterior back door, a loading area, a gate house, or a multi-family service entrance where the hardware takes weather and rough use.
13) What finishes does the Simplex L1000 pushbutton lever lock come in for matching existing hardware?
Four finishes, all told: 626 satin chrome and 609 antique brass as standard, plus 605 bright brass and 625 bright chrome as options. Satin chrome 626 is the one that matches most commercial buildings already running 626 levers and closers, so on a fleet of doors where you are only converting a few openings to pushbutton, that is usually the match.

I recently got my hands on the Kaba Simplex L1000 Series Mechanical Pushbutton Cylindrical Lever Lock, and let me tell ya, it's a game-changer! I love the convenience of the pushbutton entry, no more fumbling for keys. Plus, the key override adds an extra layer of security. Installation was a breeze, even for a DIY newbie like me. However, I wish it came with more finish options to match different door aesthetics. Overall, a solid buy for convenience and peace of mind.

I I'd like to drop a quick note about the Kaba Simplex L1000 Series Mechanical Pushbutton Cylindrical Lever Lock I got from ZenSupply. What I really dig about it is the hassle-free operation; no more fumbling for keys! However, the setup instructions could be a bit clearer, especially for those not too tech-savvy. Overall, it's a game-changer for my home security setup.
