Dormakaba RR8148-B-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Dormakaba Simplex 8148 handed, and can I flip it in the field?
Handing matters here, and you cannot change it on site. The 8148 is factory-handed and not field reversible, so you order it as left hand, left hand reverse, right hand, or right hand reverse. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left it is a left hand opening, and if the door swings out toward you it is the reverse variant. Get this wrong and the lock has to go back.
2) Will the Simplex 8148 work with the Best cores we already key our building on?
Yes, order the B key override option: small format interchangeable core for Best and equivalents in 6 or 7 pin length. The core is not included, so pull one from your stock or add it to the order. Large format removable core options are also offered for Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy in 5 or 6 pin, Sargent, and Schlage. That means the lock drops into whatever keyway your facility is already standardized on rather than adding a new one.
3) How many codes can the Simplex 8148 hold if I have a dozen people using the door?
One code, shared by everyone. The Simplex 8148 holds a single access code, which is what makes it simple to manage but also means you cannot track or revoke an individual user. If a tenant or subcontractor leaves, you re-code the lock at the keypad for everyone. For a small crew or a shared storage room that is usually fine. If you need per-user credentials and an audit trail, a mechanical pushbutton lock is the wrong category and you want an electronic access control lock.
4) Can I leave the door unlocked during business hours with the Simplex 8148?
Yes, that is the passage function. From the inside you throw a thumbturn or use the key to put the lock in passage, and people come and go without entering the code. The thumbturn or key needed for it ships with all passage models. Reverse it at close of business and the code is required again. There is also a lockout mode that kills the entry code entirely from the inside, so nobody can get in on the combination and only key override works.
5) Can the Simplex 8148 go on a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The 8148 carries a 3-hour UL/ULC fire rating for A labeled doors, and free egress is always available from the inside by turning the lever, which is what a fire door assembly requires. It is also a Grade 1 lock, so it is built for the cycle counts an institutional or high traffic commercial opening puts on it.
6) Do I get a key cylinder with the Simplex 8148 or do I have to order one separately?
The core is not included on any key override option, small format or large format. Budget a separate core keyed to your system: SFIC in 6 or 7 pin for the B option, or the matching large format core for the Corbin Russwin, Medeco/ASSA/Yale/Abloy, Sargent, or Schlage versions. This is the item most commonly forgotten on the order, and without it there is no key override on a lockout.
7) Are the levers on the Simplex 8148 ADA compliant, and do I have to specify a lever style?
The levers are fixed and ADA compliant as supplied, so there is no lever style to choose and nothing to add to meet the accessibility requirement on the operable side. The lock itself meets the Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility standard. Note the levers are fixed rather than interchangeable, so you cannot swap in a different lever design later to match other openings.
8) What finishes does the Simplex 8148 come in to match the rest of my hardware?
Four finishes: 626 satin chrome and 609 antique brass are the standard pair, with 625 bright chrome and 605 bright brass as options. Satin chrome 626 is the one that matches most commercial lever hardware already hanging in office and institutional buildings, so that is the safe pick when you are adding a keypad lock to an opening in an existing fleet.
