Dormakaba LRP1020S-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) I have a mortise exit device (or a vertical rod device). Can I put a Simplex LP1020 keypad trim on it?
No. The LP1020 cannot be used with mortise-design or vertical rod exit devices. It is rim exit device trim, and it drives the device through a tailpiece into a rim hub, which mortise and vertical rod devices do not offer. If the opening runs a mortise or vertical rod device, you need trim built for that device rather than this one.
2) What door thickness and stile width does the Simplex LP1020 exit trim need?
Door thickness range is 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) up to 2-1/4 inches (57 mm), so a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door is comfortably inside it and so are thicker insulated or clad doors. Stile is the tighter constraint: the LP1020 is wide stile trim needing a minimum of 5 inches (127 mm) of stile. Measure the lock stile of the actual door leaf, not the frame. Narrow stile aluminum storefront doors normally come in well under 5 inches, and the LP1020 will not mount on them.
3) Is the Simplex LP1020 handed, and can I flip it in the field if I order the wrong hand?
Handing is set at the factory and the LP1020 is not field reversible, so the hand has to be right on the purchase order. It is built either right hand / right hand reverse or left hand / left hand reverse. Stand outside the door, on the keypad side: if the hinges are on your right the door is right hand or right hand reverse, hinges on your left is left hand or left hand reverse. Every finish and every key override option is offered in both hands, so handing does not limit what else you can specify.
4) Which key override cylinder do I specify on a Simplex LP1020, and does the core come with it?
Five override prep options are offered, and the core is never included on any of them. Order B for SFIC (Best and equivalents, 6 or 7 pin length), C for LFIC Corbin Russwin 6-pin, M for LFIC Medeco / ASSA / Yale / Abloy 5 or 6 pin, R for LFIC Sargent, or S for LFIC Schlage. Pick the one that matches the interchangeable core system already running in the building so the override key falls under your existing master key system, then buy the core keyed to that system separately. A facility standardized on Best small format takes the B prep; a Schlage everest or classic large format house takes S.
5) What else do I have to order to finish the job with a Simplex LP1020 keypad trim?
Three things ship separately. The rim exit device and its mounting hardware are not part of the trim. The strike comes with the exit device, not with the LP1020. And the interchangeable core for the key override is a separate line item in whichever keyway family you specified (Best SFIC, Corbin Russwin, Medeco / ASSA / Yale / Abloy, Sargent, or Schlage). If the door is a Monarch device, add the K-Hub Adapter Kit. Nothing else is needed on the power side, since the trim is fully mechanical.
6) Can I use a Simplex LP1020 pushbutton lever on a fire rated exit door?
Fire rated, and carrying a 3 hour UL/ULC rating for A label doors. It is also a Grade 1 commercial product, with a heavy duty cast front housing and heavy duty mounting plate. That combination covers stairwell and corridor openings in most institutional and multi-family buildings. The exit device it mounts to has to carry its own fire label as well, so pair it with a fire rated rim device rather than a dogging-equipped standard device on a labeled opening.
7) If we dog the exit device open during business hours, does that break the Simplex LP1020 keypad?
No. The exit device can be dogged without affecting LP1020 operation. Dog the device down in the morning for free pull from outside, undog it at close, and the keypad code works normally again with no reset or re-programming. Egress is never affected either way, since anyone inside pushes the touchbar and gets out regardless of the code state on the outside.
8) What happens to a Simplex LP1020 when the power goes out or the batteries die?
Nothing changes. The LP1020 is fully mechanical, so there are no batteries to replace and no wiring to run to the door. The code is stored mechanically inside the lock. During an outage the keypad works as usual, and so does the key override if someone forgets the code. That is the main reason these show up on remote gates, roof access, pump rooms, and outbuildings where getting power to the opening is the expensive part of the job.
9) Can I give each tenant or employee their own code on a Simplex LP1020?
No. The LP1020 holds a single access code shared by everyone who uses the door, so there is no per-user code and no audit trail of who came through. For a storage room, a mechanical space, a shared service entrance, or a construction site door, that is usually what you want, since there is nothing to administer. If you need individual codes, credentials, or a record of entries, this mechanical trim is the wrong tool and you want an electronic access control device instead.
10) How hard is it to change the code on a Simplex LP1020 after a tenant or contractor leaves?
The code is changed right at the keypad, with the lock still on the door. Nothing gets removed, no cylinder is pulled, no software or programming device is involved. For a property manager cycling contractors through a mechanical room or a job site door, that means a code change takes minutes and costs nothing, which is the practical difference between this and re-keying a cylinder every turnover.
11) Will a Simplex LP1020 work on a walk-in freezer or cooler door?
Yes, with the longer tailpiece. The trim ships with a 2-3/4 inch (70 mm) tailpiece for standard exit device operation, and dormakaba offers a 5 inch (125 mm) tailpiece, part number 74773-000-01, for freezer doors. That part is sold separately and has to be added to the order. Door thickness still has to land between 1-3/8 and 2-1/4 inches for the trim itself to mount.
12) Can the Simplex LP1020 keypad go on an exterior door that takes weather and rough use?
It is built for exterior applications and rated commercial duty. The pushbuttons are solid metal and vandal resistant rather than rubber or plastic, the housing is heavy duty cast, and the mounting plate is heavy duty as well, all at Grade 1. That is the specification for a service entrance, a yard gate house door, or an alley exit that sees boots and carts every day. Being mechanical, there is no electronics package behind the keypad to fail in cold or wet.
13) What finishes does the Simplex LP1020 come in, and will it match the rest of my building hardware?
Four finishes are offered: 605 bright brass (03), 609 antique brass (05), 625 bright chrome (026), and 626 satin chrome (26D). Satin chrome 626 is the one that lines up with the 26D satin chrome or satin nickel look on most commercial levers, closers, and exit devices, so that is the usual pick when you are matching an existing fleet of openings. All four are available in both hands and with any of the five key override preps.
14) Does the Simplex LP1020 meet ADA requirements for an accessible opening?
ADA compliant, with a fixed ADA-compliant lever rather than a knob or a thumb turn. The lever handle is what an accessible opening calls for on the operable hardware, and egress through the exit device is push-to-exit, which needs no grasping at all. For a school, clinic, or government facility standardizing on accessible hardware, that covers both sides of the door.
