1) Is the Simplex 8146 pushbutton lock handed, and can I flip it in the field if I order the wrong hand?
Handing matters here, and you cannot fix it on the door. The 8146 is factory-handed and not field reversible. It is built in four hands: left hand, left hand reverse, right hand, and right hand reverse. Stand outside the opening, see which side the hinges are on and whether the door pulls toward you or pushes away, and order that hand. A wrong-hand lock is a return, not a bench adjustment.
2) Does the Simplex 8146 lock come with the key override cylinder, and which keyways can I match to my existing system?
The core is not included on any 8146 key override option, so order it separately keyed into your existing system. Five override formats are offered: B for small format interchangeable cores, Best and equivalents in 6 or 7-pin length; C for large format interchangeable Corbin Russwin, 6-pin; M for large format Medeco, ASSA, Yale or Abloy in 5 or 6-pin length; R for large format Sargent; and S for large format Schlage. If the building is already keyed to one of those systems, pick the matching letter and the master key you carry now still opens the door.
3) How many user codes can a Simplex 8146 hold, and can I give each tenant or employee their own code?
One code, shared by everyone. The Simplex 8146 is a single access code lock, so there is no way to issue a separate code per person or to audit who came through the door. That is the tradeoff for a lock with no batteries and no wiring. If you need individual codes, an audit trail, or the ability to delete one person's access without changing the code for the whole building, you want an electronic access control lock instead, not the 8146. For a back door, a storage room, an equipment room, or a small office where a handful of people share one code and you rotate it when someone leaves, it does the job.
4) Can a Simplex 8146 pushbutton lock go on a fire rated door?
Yes. The Simplex 8146 mortise pushbutton lock carries a 3-hour UL and ULC fire rating for "A" labeled doors, which covers the stairwell, corridor and mechanical room openings that normally take a 3-hour label. It is also a Grade 1 lock, the heaviest commercial duty grade under the ANSI/BHMA scale, and the levers are fixed and ADA compliant, so it suits high traffic institutional openings where the lever has to be operable without grasping or twisting.
5) Does anyone need a code to get out through a door with a Simplex 8146 lock?
No. Egress is always free. On the Simplex 8146 the code only controls entry from the outside; the inside lever retracts the latch at any time with a single motion, which is what lets it sit on an egress door in a commercial building. The code, the passage function and the lockout all act on the outside trim only.
6) How do I hold a Simplex 8146 unlocked during business hours and lock it back down at close?
