The 6510/COV Anti-tamper Alarm Cover consists of a clear, super tough polycarbonate shield and frame that fits over the 6510-S35 Emergency Pull Station. To utilize the 6510/COV; lift the clear plastic cover to gain access to the pull handle on the 6510 pull station for door release, or alarm activation.

Emergency Pull Station Operation

When the 6510-S35 pull station handle is activated, locks are released through a SPDT switch. A second independent set of SPDT contacts is also simultaneously switched to allow communication with an alarm monitoring station such as a card access system, or remote Annunciator panel.

1) Does the alarm cover block emergency egress or lock out the pull station?
No. The clear cover lifts to reach the pull handle underneath, so the pull station stays usable for door release or alarm activation. It guards against vandalism, accidental impact, dust and grime without restricting emergency egress.
2) What is the difference between the 6510/COV, 6510/COV/S and 6510/COV/SR?
Three build levels. The plain 6510/COV is the cover only, a shield with no electronics. The /S adds a piezo alarm sounder that annunciates locally when the cover is lifted. The /SR adds that piezo sounder plus an SPDT relay output, so the lift event can also be reported to a panel or access control system. Pick /SR when you need the tamper signal off the door, not just an audible at the wall.
3) If I already have the 6510 pull station wired to my access control system, does the cover change the wiring?
The pull station's own switching is unaffected. On the 6510-S35, pulling the handle releases locks through an SPDT switch and a second independent set of SPDT contacts switches at the same time for reporting to a card access system or remote annunciator. The cover sits over it. Only the /SR version adds wiring of its own, an SPDT relay output for the tamper signal, plus power for its piezo sounder.
4) Is the 6510/COV a shield only, or does it come with the pull station?
Cover only. The 6510/COV is an accessory consisting of the clear polycarbonate shield and its frame; the 6510-S35 Emergency Pull Station or the 5000 Series push button it protects is ordered separately. Budget for both if you are building a new emergency release point.
5) If I only need an audible deterrent at the door and not a protective shield, what should I use instead of the Dortronics 6510/COV?
The 6510/COV is a clear polycarbonate shield and frame that fits over a 6510-S35 Emergency Pull Station, guarding it against physical damage, vandalism, dust and grime while still allowing egress. If the goal is purely sound, a standalone sounder covers it without adding a shield: the RCI 914 Series is a delayed egress sounder with field-selectable volume output up to 102dB, and the Adams Rite 29-0218 is a piezo electric horn with multi-voltage compatibility. Use one of those when you want noise only; use the 6510/COV when the device itself needs physical protection, and choose the variant with the piezo alarm sounder if you want both in one part.
6) I need a dry contact back to my access control panel from the door release point. Is the Dortronics 6510/COV cover the right way to get that, or is a switch kit better?
The 6510/COV is offered in a cover-only version, a version with a piezo alarm sounder, and a version with a piezo sounder plus an SPDT relay output. The SPDT relay version is what gives you a contact from the cover itself when it is lifted. If instead you want the signal to come from the exit device or lock, that is a different part: Command Access offers field installable request to exit kits such as the CRSREXKIT-ED for Cal Royal 22/98 and Sargent 80 Series exit devices with an SPDT switch, the CYREXKIT-ED for Corbin 5000 and Yale 7000 exit devices rated 5A, and the REX-KIT-ML for ML1-Series mortise locks. The cover signals that someone opened the shield; the REX kits signal that the hardware was operated.
7) Can I use the 6510/COV outdoors or in a washdown area?
Yes, with the optional weather gaskets. The cover shields the device from dust, grime and severe environments inside and out, and Dortronics states that with weather gaskets it extends device life in washdown or saltwater applications. The gaskets are an add-on, so specify them separately if the opening is exposed.
8) Where do these anti-tamper covers typically get installed?

The 6510/COV models are 6510/COV, 6510/COV/S and 6510/COV/SR, and what varies between them is the cover function: cover only, cover with piezo alarm sounder, and cover with piezo sounder plus SPDT relay output. Power and downstream switching are separate items. Adams Rite offers the 4605 transformer, 115 VAC to 12/24 VAC with a 40 volt-amp output, for low voltage power, and the Locknetics RDB4 is a four-output relay distribution board if you need to fan one input out to several controlled devices.
11) Will a rain guard like the HES 1000-102 do the same job as this cover?
No, different part for a different device. The HES 1000-102 is a Grade 1 rain guard for 1006 Series electric strikes, protecting a strike in the frame from rain or high dust. The Dortronics 6510/COV protects a wall-mounted pull station or push button from tampering and impact, and only the /S and /SR versions alarm when opened.
12) I am specifying release hardware for an all-glass entrance. Does the Dortronics 6510/COV work there?
The 6510/COV is a wall or surface mounted shield sized 4-7/8 inch by 5-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch that fits over 6500 Series pull stations and 5000 Series push buttons, so it needs a flat mounting surface behind the protected device rather than a glass leaf.
