DynaLock DYK1410 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the DynaLock 1410 be set up to unlock on a fire alarm or power loss?
Yes. The 1410 is field-selectable for fail-safe or fail-secure operation. Set it fail-safe and the lock releases when power drops, which is how you tie cabinets into an alarm or egress release. Set it fail-secure and the cabinet stays locked through a power failure, which is the usual choice for narcotics, evidence, or IT cabinets.
2) What is the difference between the DynaLock 1410 and the 1420?
Monitoring, and length. The 1420 adds dual outputs that report both the catch and the locking pin, so an access control panel or head end can see cabinet status. The 1410 has no monitoring outputs. That also makes the 1420 longer at 3-11/16 inches versus 2-7/8 inches for the 1410. Holding force, dual voltage, and fail-safe/fail-secure selection are the same on both.
3) Should I use an electric cabinet lock like the DynaLock 1410 or a keypad cabinet lock?
Pick the 1410 when the cabinet needs to be controlled by something else: a card reader, an access panel, a remote release, or a fire alarm interface. It has no user interface of its own and has to be wired to 12 or 24 VDC. If you want the cabinet to stand alone with no wiring, a keypad unit is the better fit, such as the HES KP20 stand-alone keypad cabinet lock or the SDC 295 Series battery powered programmable cabinet lock with a 30-user keypad. For a purely mechanical opening with no power at all, the Lockey C170 is a surface mount combination cam lock.
4) If I do not have power run to the cabinet, what should I use instead of the DynaLock 1410?
The 1410 is an electronic lock that runs on 12/24 VDC, so it needs a wired supply. For an unwired cabinet, the SDC 295 Series is a battery powered programmable cabinet lock with a 30-user keypad, and the Lockey C170 is a mechanical surface mount keyless digital combination cam lock that needs no power at all and fits doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The HES KS-M is a mechanical server cabinet lock for the same no-power situation.
5) What is the difference between the DynaLock 1410 and the HES KP20 for a cabinet with code access?
The HES KP20 is a Grade 1 stand-alone keypad cabinet lock, meaning the credential is entered at the lock itself and no head-end is required. The DynaLock 1410 has no keypad; it is an electronic lock operated by 12/24 VDC from whatever controls it, with field-selectable fail-safe or fail-secure operation. Choose the 1410 when the cabinet is on an access control system, and the KP20 when you want the code entered at the cabinet door.
6) What else could I use instead of the DynaLock 1410 for an electrically controlled cabinet?
The closest cross-brand equivalent we carry is the SDC 290 Series micro cabinet electric bolt lock, which is also a dual voltage electric cabinet lock. If the cabinet is a server rack and you want the lock tied into wired access control, the HES KS200 server cabinet lock runs Wiegand. The HES KS-M is the mechanical version of that server lock for openings with no power. Key-operated cabinet locks like the BEST 3L and 5L Series or the Sargent 4142 are a different approach entirely, keyed rather than powered.
7) Do I need to cut into the cabinet door to install the DynaLock 1410?
No mortising. The 1410 is a compact surface-mounted design that fastens through four countersunk holes, and the self-adjusting alignment tabs take up the small gaps between the catch and the lock body so you are not shimming it. That makes it workable on existing casework where you can't pull the door to machine it. Compare that with keyed cabinet locks like the Sargent 1655 or 4142, which need a cylinder hole bored through the front.
8) Can one DynaLock 1410 work on both a top-hinged and a side-hinged cabinet door?
Yes, the same 1410 handles both. Mounting is rated for top or side applications, so you can standardize one part number across a run of cabinets and drawers instead of stocking handed versions. Some keyed cabinet locks handle this differently, with field reversible handing, as on the Sargent 1655.
9) For a drawer rather than a cabinet door, is the DynaLock 1410 the right part?
The 1410 is a surface-mounted cabinet lock that can be top or side mounted with self-adjusting alignment tabs and four countersunk mounting holes, so it works where you can wire the drawer and surface mount the body. If you want a keyed drawer lock instead, the Sargent KESO F1 4152 Series is a cabinet lock for drawers with security system integration, and the KESO F1 4252 Series is a drawer lock with field reversible operation.
10) Is the DynaLock 1420 different from the 1410, and which should I order?
Both are 1400 Series heavy duty dual-voltage cabinet locks with 12/24 VDC field selectivity and fail-safe or fail-secure operation. The 1410 measures 1-1/4 inch D x 1-3/16 inch W x 2-7/8 inch H, while the 1420 is 1-1/4 inch D x 1-3/16 inch W x 3-11/16 inch L and adds dual outputs to monitor the catch and locking pin. Order the 1420 if you need monitoring reported back to the panel; the 1410 if you only need the release.
