DynaLock 3101C Series 15000 Lb. Delayed Egress System (Generation II)

Model 3101C-G2

3101C-G2 Single Delay Egress Lock Outswing
Single coil. Mounts to the underside of the frame header.

The 3101C Series is designed to satisfy egress codes and high security needs at the same time. The second generation 3101C system integrates a redesigned polymer housing cover and LED status indicator, while maintaining DynaLock’s proven and forgiving egress-sensing technology. In a typical installation, the door is normally closed and latched by the existing mechanical door hardware and magnetically secured by the 3101C Lock. Attempting to exit by by unlatching and pushing on the door will activate the 3101C delay egress timer. The audible and red LED will pulsate for 15 seconds (30 seconds field selectable). After the time delay has elapsed, the lock will release and the audible will sound continuously with a green LED, until the door is shut and the lock is reset. Reset and/or bypass are accomplished with a built-in keyswitch or remote signal. The system unlocks automatically when the 3101C is integrated with the building emergency fire alarm system or power is removed. Fire alarm contacts on the 3101C Lock are field selectable for NO and NC signals

DynaLock 3101C-G2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the DynaLock 3101C-G2 delayed egress lock work on an inswing door, or is it outswing only?
The 3101C-G2 is set up for a single outswing door, mounting to the underside of the frame header with a single coil. DynaLock's 3101C delay egress line as a whole is surface mounted for outswing single or double doors and inswing single doors, and the locks are non-handed, so there is no left or right hand to specify. For an inswing single door you want the 3101C-TJ101 configuration rather than the plain 3101C body, since that version carries its own size (2-3/4 D x 4 H x 11 L) for the different mounting condition.
2) How much header room do I need to mount a 3101C-G2 mag lock?
Plan for a body measuring 3-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 11 inches mounted to the underside of the frame header, with the armature on the door. Because it is surface mounted and works with the existing mechanical latching hardware, there is no door prep, no electric hinge, and no door cord to route: the sensing is done by a concealed optical sensor in the lock rather than by anything mounted in the leaf.
3) What actually happens at the door when someone pushes on a delayed egress mag lock?
Push on the door after unlatching it and the 3101C timer starts. The audible and a red LED pulse for 15 seconds, field selectable to 30 seconds. When the delay runs out the magnet releases, the audible goes to a continuous tone and the LED turns green, and it stays that way until the door is shut and the lock is reset. Reset and bypass are both done at the built-in keyswitch or by a remote signal. Tie it to the building fire alarm and the lock drops automatically, and it also releases on loss of power; the fire alarm contacts are field selectable for NO or NC.
4) What power supply do I need for a DynaLock 3101C-G2, and how much current does it draw?
Auto-sensing multi-voltage input takes 12 or 24 VAC or VDC with no jumper to set. The single-magnet 3101C and the 3101C-TJ101 draw 456 mA at 12VDC or 263 mA at 24VDC. Running at 24V roughly halves the current, which matters when you are sizing a shared supply or long wire runs. The double-magnet versions in the family (3121C and 3121C2) pull considerably more, 849 mA at 12VDC or 480 mA at 24VDC, so do not size the supply off the single-door number if you are also feeding a pair.
5) Which options do I have to specify when ordering a 3101C-G2 delayed egress lock?
Five yes/no option axes build the part: Anti-Tamper Switch, Auxiliary Alarm Output, Bypass Monitor, Door Status Switch, and Dynastat Force Sensor. All 32 combinations of those five are orderable. There is also a required choice on Low Power Consumption Coils, and that one has a restriction worth knowing before you spec it: the low power coil option cannot be combined with the Dynastat Force Sensor. Pick one or the other.
6) Should I use a delayed egress mag lock or a standard magnetic lock on this door?
Two different jobs. A standard mag lock like the Alarm Controls 1200 Series single magnetic lock holds the door until an access control device or a request-to-exit releases it, with no built-in delay or local alarm. A delayed egress unit such as the 3101C-G2 holds for 15 seconds (30 field selectable) after someone pushes on the door, sounds locally, then lets them out on its own. Use delayed egress where you need to deter people walking out with something while still permitting egress, most commonly retail, healthcare and memory care. If you want the delayed egress behavior from another brand, the Alarm Controls 1200DE Series is a single-door delayed egress magnetic lock.
7) Does a delayed egress mag lock need to be tied into the fire alarm?
Yes, and the 3101C-G2 is built for it. Integrated with the building emergency fire alarm system, the lock unlocks automatically, and its fire alarm contacts are field selectable for NO and NC signals so they suit whichever way the panel presents the signal. It also releases when power is removed, which is the fail safe behavior any egress door magnet has to have. Budget the low voltage run from the panel or a relay into the lock as part of the install.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the DynaLock 3101C-G2 for a single outswing door that needs a delayed egress mag lock?
The Alarm Controls 1200DE is the direct peer: it is a delayed egress magnetic lock for a single door, the same application the DynaLock 3101C-G2 covers on an outswing opening. The 3101C-G2 holds at 1500 lbs. and runs on 12/24 VDC. Both are surface-mounted delayed egress magnets rather than standard magnets with an external timer board, so either one satisfies a spec calling for delayed egress in the lock itself.
9) If the opening does not require delayed egress, what magnetic lock can be used instead of the DynaLock 3101C-G2?
For a plain access-controlled single door with no egress delay, the Alarm Controls 1200 Series single magnetic lock or the Dorma EML310 single-door magnet at 1500 lb. covers it. The EML310 is an electrically locked (fail safe) magnet and is fire rated. The DynaLock 3101C-G2 carries the delayed egress timer, sensor and audible inside the lock housing, so it is the choice only when code or security calls for the delay; a straight magnet does not provide it.
10) The DynaLock 3101C-G2 is for a single door - what do I use on a pair of doors?
Two-leaf openings take a double-door magnet such as the Alarm Controls 1200D Series or the Dorma EML320 at 1500 lb., which is electrically locked (fail safe) and fire rated. The DynaLock 3101C-G2 is a single-coil unit mounting to the underside of the frame header on one leaf. Note the EML320 and 1200D are standard magnets without the delayed egress function the 3101C-G2 provides.
11) I am replacing a Locknetics 390+ magnetic lock - is the DynaLock 3101C-G2 the right swap?
For a straight one-for-one on a Locknetics 390+, the Schlage M390RFK is the direct retrofit, rated 1500 lbs holding force with door status monitor, magnetic bond sensor and relock time delay. The DynaLock 3101C-G2 also holds at 1500 lbs. but it is a delayed egress system with its own timer, audible and optical egress sensor, so it is the choice when the opening is being upgraded to delayed egress rather than restored to what was there.
12) Do I need the Door Status Switch and Bypass Monitor options if the lock reports to an access control panel?
If the head end needs to know the state of the opening, order the monitoring options rather than adding them later. Door Status Switch reports whether the door is closed. Bypass Monitor reports when the lock has been bypassed at the keyswitch or by remote signal. Anti-Tamper Switch flags the housing being opened. Auxiliary Alarm Output is a secondary set of SPDT delay egress alarm contacts, which is what you use when the primary contacts are already committed to the fire alarm or local annunciator. Each is an independent yes/no on the order and all combinations are available, so a monitored lock with all four is a real configuration.
13) Do I need a separate access control panel or timer board to run a delayed egress mag lock?
No external controller is needed. An onboard digital processor runs all lock functions on the 3101C-G2, including the egress timer, the audible, the LED and the fire alarm release. Sensitivity is set on the door with a micrometer style adjustment wheel. Custom factory programs are available where an application or a local code requires different behavior. It also works with the existing mechanical hardware on the door, so you are not buying an electrified exit device or a special power supply to complete the job.
14) Will wind load or a sagging door cause false trips on the 3101C-G2 egress sensor?
The sensing is opto-electronic, a concealed optical sensor that DynaLock states is unaffected by wind, warpage or door sag. That is the difference from force-sensing designs that read pressure on the leaf and can be set off by a gust on an exterior opening. Sensitivity is dialed in at install with a micrometer style adjustment wheel. If you do want force sensing on the door, the Dynastat Force Sensor is a selectable option, though it cannot be combined with the low power consumption coils.
15) How does the guard or manager let someone through a delayed egress door without setting off the alarm?
Bypass and reset both run through a built-in keyswitch on the lock, or through a remote signal from a guard station or access control output. Bypass lets an authorized person out with no delay and no local alarm; reset is what clears the unit after a delay cycle has run and the door has been shut. If you need the head end to log those bypasses, order the Bypass Monitor option, which is one of the five selectable options on the lock.
16) What is the low power consumption coil option for on the DynaLock 3101C-G2, and should I take it?
Low power coils cut the draw on the magnet, which is what you want when a single supply is feeding several openings or the doors are on battery backup for any length of time. It is a required selection on the order, yes or no. The one constraint: the low power coil cannot be combined with the Dynastat Force Sensor, so if the job calls for force sensing at the door, take the standard coil and size the supply against 456 mA at 12VDC or 263 mA at 24VDC.
17) Can a shear lock or a mortise magnet replace the DynaLock 3101C-G2?
They look adjacent but they are different mounting families. The ROFU 8031-002 is a shear lock at 2200 LB holding force on 12/24VDC, monitored, and the Schlage 320M is a compact mortise electromagnetic lock for sliding doors at 1500 lbs. Both are concealed into the door or frame rather than surface applied, and neither carries the delayed egress timer and audible the DynaLock 3101C-G2 has built in. The 3101C-G2 surface mounts to the underside of the frame header and works with the existing mechanical door hardware, so it is a retrofit onto a prepped opening rather than a mortised installation.
18) I need door position monitoring - is the DynaLock 3101C-G2 the only option, or is there a peer that includes it?
Several peers build monitoring in. The Dorma EML310 is offered with a door position sensor, and in the BA DP configuration with both bond alert and door position sensor. The Schlage M390RFK includes a door status monitor and a magnetic bond sensor along with 1500 lbs holding force. The Locknetics MG Series is offered in standard or monitored form. On the DynaLock 3101C-G2, door status switch, anti-tamper switch, bypass monitor and the Dynastat force sensor are each ordered as yes or no options, so the monitoring set is built to the job rather than fixed.
19) What are my alternatives in delayed egress hardware besides the DynaLock 3101C-G2?
Within magnetic locking, the Alarm Controls 1200DE is the peer built as a delayed egress magnetic lock for a single door. The ACSI 3710/3711 electromagnetic locks are another line in the same family. The distinction to check when specifying is what the delay logic sits in: the DynaLock 3101C-G2 is microprocessor controlled with a 15 second delay, field selectable to 30 seconds, and needs no external system controller, and its fire alarm contacts are field selectable for NO and NC signals so it drops on the building fire alarm.
20) Do I need electrified exit devices or electric hinges to use the DynaLock 3101C-G2?
No. The DynaLock 3101C-G2 works with existing door hardware and does not require touch or electrified exit devices, electric hinges, door cords or special power supplies, because its concealed optical sensor reads the exit attempt at the lock. By contrast, standard magnets such as the Alarm Controls 1200 Series or the Dorma EML310, which is electrically locked (fail safe), release on a signal from whatever release device the opening is fitted with, so the request-to-exit and delay logic has to come from elsewhere in the system.
21) Will a Dortronics 1107 slim line mag lock fit where the DynaLock 3101C-G2 goes?
They are different footprints. The Dortronics 1107 is a narrow 2 inch slim line unit at 600lbs for a single door, sized for tight frames. The DynaLock 3101C-G2 measures 3-1/2 inch D x 2-3/4 inch H x 11 inch L and comes in 628 satin aluminum, so the header needs the depth to carry it. Measure the frame stop before assuming one drops in where the other was.
22) Will a DynaLock 3101C-G2 match the aluminum storefront hardware already on my building?
Finish is 628 satin aluminum, the US28 clear anodized look that standard aluminum storefront and most surface mag locks are supplied in, so it reads the same as adjacent door hardware and frames. The housing on the Generation 2 body is a redesigned polymer cover with an LED status indicator, so the visible element at the header is the cover and the indicator rather than a bare extrusion.
