B-LINE E51ALT1S – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the E51ALT1S normally open or normally closed?
It ships configured 2-wire AC normally open, but the sensor head carries a programmable output selector switch so you can set NO or NC operation in the field. You don't need to order a different part to flip the logic.
2) Will this limit switch style prox sensor survive washdown or outdoor use?
The E51ALT1S is rated NEMA 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12, 13 and IP67, which covers washdown, temporary submersion, dust, oil and corrosive areas. Receptacle and housing are die cast zinc with a plastic head. Operating range is -13 to 158F (-25 to 70C), so unheated outdoor enclosures in cold climates need checking against that low end.
3) Does the E51ALT1S come with a cable or do I need to wire a connector?
It comes with an 8 ft (2.5 m) cable already attached, so there's no separate cordset to order. If your run to the panel is longer than 8 feet, plan on a junction point.
4) Shielded or unshielded inductive sensor, and does that matter for mounting?
The E51 head is a shielded inductive proximity sensor, which means it can be mounted flush in metal without the surrounding steel triggering it. Shielded heads have shorter sensing range than unshielded ones, so if you need extra standoff distance an unshielded head is the better choice.
5) How do I tell on the machine whether the sensor has power versus whether it has actually tripped?
Two LEDs do it. Green shows power present, yellow shows output status. That lets a maintenance tech standing at the conveyor separate a dead supply from a target that never reached the face, without pulling a meter out.
6) Can the E51ALT1S drive a contactor coil directly, or do I need an interposing relay?
Output tops out at 500 mA solid state. That's fine for a PLC input card or a small pilot device, but a motor starter coil with a higher inrush needs an interposing relay between the sensor and the coil.
7) What are the physical dimensions of the E51ALT1S for laying out a mounting bracket?
The E51ALT1S measures 4.53 x 1.78 x 1.54 inches (height x width x length) and weighs 2.15 lb. The limit switch style body means it mounts like a mechanical limit switch rather than a barrel-threaded prox, so plan bracket holes for that footprint.
8) Why would I use a limit switch style prox sensor instead of a standard barrel sensor?
The limit switch style body of the E51 lets you swap a worn mechanical limit switch for a no-contact sensor on the same style of mounting, with no moving lever arm to bend or wear out. It's modular too: the sensor head separates from the receptacle, so a damaged head can be replaced without rewiring the 8 ft cable back to the panel. A barrel prox is the cheaper pick where you have a clean threaded mounting hole and no existing limit switch footprint.
9) What happens if the output shorts out on the E51ALT1S?
The output is short circuit protected, so a shorted load or a pinched cable at the output won't take the sensor out. Peak switching is capped at 500 mA, and repeatability is under 0.3 percent.
