B-LINE E51ALT2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the E51ALT2 proximity sensor run on the same voltage as my existing limit switch circuit, AC or DC?
Yes on both counts. The E51ALT2 accepts 20 to 264V AC or DC, so it drops into 24V DC control circuits and 120 or 240V AC circuits without changing the supply. Output is a 500 mA AC/DC solid state output, wired as a 2-wire AC normally open arrangement, so it is a load-in-series device rather than a dry contact. Size your load to stay under 500 mA.
2) Can I get a normally closed output from the E51ALT2 inductive sensor, or is it normally open only?
Both. The sensor head carries a programmable output selector switch for N.O. or N.C. operation, so you set the state in the field instead of stocking two part numbers. The base contact configuration is listed as 2-wire AC, normally open.
3) Is the E51 Series proximity sensor rated for washdown or outdoor use?
It is. The E51ALT2 carries NEMA 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, 6P, 12 and 13 plus IP67, which covers rain, hosedown, corrosive washdown (4X) and temporary immersion (6P, IP67). The receptacle and housing are die cast zinc with a plastic head. Operating range is -13 to 158 degrees F (-25 to 70 degrees C), so unheated outdoor enclosures in cold climates need checking against that lower limit.
4) Will the E51ALT2 sensor fit where a standard limit switch is mounted?
That is the point of it. The E51 is a limit switch style modular body, so it mounts and wires like the mechanical limit switch it replaces but senses metal targets with no physical contact and no lever arm to wear out. Overall it measures 4.53 by 1.78 by 1.54 inches and weighs just under a pound. Wiring lands on screw terminals.
5) Will an inductive proximity sensor like the E51ALT2 detect plastic or cardboard on my conveyor?
No. Inductive proximity sensors only detect metal targets. If you need to sense plastic, glass, wood, liquid or cardboard, you want a capacitive or photoelectric sensor instead. Use the E51 inductive for metal parts, cams, gear teeth, cylinder rods and machine position feedback.
6) Can the E51ALT2 be mounted flush in a metal bracket or machine frame?
Yes. It is a shielded inductive sensor, which means the field is focused out the face and the unit can be embedded flush in surrounding metal without false tripping. Unshielded sensors cannot do that and need a clear zone around the head. Shielded also means a somewhat shorter sensing distance for a given head size.
7) Is the E51ALT2 protected if the output gets shorted during commissioning?
Yes, the solid state output is short circuit protected, so a miswired or shorted load during startup should not destroy the sensor. Keep the connected load within the 500 mA maximum. Repeatability is tight as well, with accuracy listed at under 0.3 percent, which matters when the sensor is setting a position stop rather than just a presence flag.
8) Can I drive a motor starter coil or contactor directly from the E51ALT2?
Only small ones. The output is rated 500 mA AC/DC solid state, so any coil drawing more than half an amp needs an interposing relay between the sensor and the load. Control relays and PLC inputs are well within range.
9) How do I tell if the E51 sensor is powered versus actually sensing a target?
Two LEDs do it. Green indicates power present, yellow indicates output status. So a green-only LED on a machine that is not running tells you the supply is fine and the target is out of range, which saves pulling the cover to meter it.
