Eaton DPF221R – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will an Eaton DPF221R or DPF222R AC disconnect work for my outdoor condensing unit?
Both Eaton DPF pullout disconnects are built for outdoor equipment: the enclosure is NEMA 3R galvanized steel, which is the rating for rain, sleet and ice exposure on an outdoor wall or condenser pad. Rated 120/240V, with a 10 kAIC interrupt rating. Pick DPF221R for a 30A unit and DPF222R for 60A, matching the amperage on the equipment nameplate.
2) Does the Eaton DPF AC disconnect take fuses, or is it non-fused?
The DPF pullout is a non-fused disconnect. It breaks the circuit for service isolation but provides no overcurrent protection of its own, so the branch circuit still needs its breaker or fuses upstream. If your condensing unit nameplate calls for maximum fuse size (HACR fuse protection at the disconnect), this is not the right pullout, you need a fused type.
3) What wire size will the Eaton DPF pullout disconnect accept, and can I land aluminum?
Lugs are rated #14-3 AWG, Cu/Al, so both copper and aluminum conductors land in it. That range covers typical 30A and 60A HVAC feeders. Anything larger than #3 AWG will not terminate, so size the conductors before you buy.
4) The pullout head on my Eaton AC disconnect is cracked. Can I just replace the head?
Yes. For a replacement pullout head on the Eaton DPF disconnect, order part number 96-3258-4 rather than replacing the whole enclosure.
5) Is a pullout disconnect enough to meet the service disconnect requirement at the outdoor unit, or do I need a switched one?
A pullout is a disconnecting means: pulling the head opens the circuit and the head can be taken away with the tech, which is how most residential and light commercial condensing units are served. Where the job spec calls for a lockable switched or fused disconnect at the unit, the DPF non-fused pullout is not the match. It is 120/240V rated, so it also is not the part for a 480V rooftop unit.
6) How much wall space do I need for an Eaton DPF disconnect next to the condenser?
The enclosure measures 8.7 x 5.4 x 3.15 inches and weighs 2.7 lb, so it mounts on a single stud bay or straight to a block wall without extra backing. The light weight makes it a one-hand mount while you land the conduit.
7) What is the difference between the Eaton DPF221R and DPF222R disconnects?
Amperage is the only choice on this pullout. DPF221R is the 30A version and DPF222R is the 60A. Everything else is common between them: NEMA 3R galvanized steel enclosure, ANSI 61 grey finish, 120/240V, 10 kAIC, #14-3 AWG Cu/Al lugs.
8) Can I standardize on one AC disconnect across a whole property with mixed 2-ton and 5-ton units?
Close to it. The Eaton DPF pullout comes in two amperages, 30A (DPF221R) and 60A (DPF222R), and the enclosure, finish, mounting and lug range are the same on both. Smaller residential condensers usually land on the 30A and larger or three-phase-free light commercial units on the 60A, so a fleet stocks two part numbers and one spare pullout head, 96-3258-4, that fits the family.
9) Will the Eaton DPF disconnect hold up on a coastal or rooftop install?
The enclosure is galvanized steel with a NEMA 3R rating and an ANSI 61 grey finish, which handles rain, sleet and ice on a rooftop or exterior wall. For heavy salt exposure a non-metallic enclosure is the usual call in the trade, since galvanized steel will still show corrosion at cut edges and fastener points over time.
