B-LINE 4A-12-VT12 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does a vertical tee down fitting do in a cable tray run?
A vertical tee down splits a straight cable tray run into a branch that drops away from the main line, changing elevation in the branch while the through run continues. B-Line part 4A-12-VT12 is the aluminum version for 12 inch wide, 4 inch deep tray with a 12 inch bend radius. Use it where a feeder tray needs to break off and head down toward panels or equipment rather than staying at ceiling height.
2) What is the difference between a vertical tee down and a vertical tee up?
Direction of the branch. A tee down, which is what the 4A-12-VT12 is, sends the branch below the plane of the main run. A tee up sends it above. They are not interchangeable and they are not reversible in the field, so confirm which way your drop goes before ordering. If the branch has to split left or right on the same plane, you want a horizontal tee instead.
3) Is aluminum cable tray the right choice, or should I use steel?
Aluminum, which is what this tee is made of, is the usual pick where weight and corrosion resistance matter, for example outdoors, in damp areas, or on long spans where crews are lifting sections overhead. This fitting weighs 10.5 lb. Steel tray is typically chosen where higher load capacity or lower material cost drives the spec. Do not mix aluminum fittings into a steel run, keep the material consistent through the system for bonding and splice hardware.
4) Is the B-Line Eaton cable tray vertical tee CSA certified?
CSA certification is listed for this fitting, which is what inspectors on Canadian projects ask for. That covers the fitting itself, the tray run and its supports still have to be installed and bonded per the code in force on your job.
5) How much length does this vertical tee add to my cable tray layout?
Figure 15 inches of length for the fitting itself when you lay out the run. That is the dimension to subtract from your straight tray lengths on either side of the tee so the splices land where you want them.
6) Do splice plates and hardware come with the cable tray tee?
The order covers the vertical tee down fitting, model 4A-12-VT12. Splice plates, bolts, and any hold-down or support hardware for the drop leg are ordered separately, so count the connection points on both the through run and the branch and add the matching splice kits to your order.
