The branch is formed on a 12 inch radius. That matters because cable has a minimum bend radius of its own, usually expressed as a multiple of the cable outside diameter, so a larger fitting radius is what keeps large power cable from being overbent at the rise. Check your cable's minimum bend radius against the 12 inch figure before you commit.

A vertical tee up lets the tray run continue straight while a branch breaks off upward, so you feed a riser or an overhead drop without cutting the main run. A vertical elbow only changes the direction of a single run, it gives you no branch. If you need the main line and a rise, this is the fitting; if the run simply turns up or down, use a vertical elbow.

Allow 15 inches of length along the main run for the fitting, with 9 inch width and 4 inch side rails. Lay that out against your support spacing so a hanger does not land on the fitting itself.

The 4A-09-VTU12 vertical tee up is UL Classified. For an inspector on a commercial or institutional job that is usually the line item they want to see on tray fittings used as an equipment grounding conductor path.

Plan on it. The 4A-09-VTU12 is the fitting body only, so the splice connectors and bolts that tie it to the adjoining straight sections are ordered as separate items, sized to the same Series 2-5 aluminum 4 inch rail profile.

Aluminum is the material here, and at 10.48 lb this tee is light enough to set in place by hand overhead. Aluminum also holds up in damp and corrosive areas without coating maintenance. Where a run needs higher mechanical loading or the spec calls for hot dip galvanized or stainless, you want the steel equivalent instead.
