B-LINE 18126 RTSC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the B-Line 18126 RTSC junction box be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The 18126 RTSC is a NEMA 3R enclosure with a rain hood over the cover, so it is built for outdoor use where falling rain, sleet and snow are the concern. NEMA 3R protects against falling water and external ice formation; it is not a washdown or hosedown rating, so for direct spray or heavy dust you want a Type 4 or 4X box instead. Mounting is surface, via embossed thru holes in the back.
2) What are the actual box dimensions on the 18126 RTSC enclosure?
18 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 6 inches deep. That 6 inch depth is what decides whether your gutter taps, terminal blocks or a small contactor will sit inside with the cover closed, since the screw cover is flanged and does not add usable interior space. Weight is 13.5 lb, light enough for a one-man surface mount on a wall or strut.
3) Does this B-Line junction box come with knockouts, or do I have to drill it?
It ships with 5 knockouts in the bottom of the box. Conduit entries anywhere else (sides, back or through the cover) you punch yourself. Keeping penetrations on the bottom is what preserves the 3R rating outdoors, so plan your raceway to enter from below wherever you can.
4) Is this B-Line enclosure UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
It carries UL 50, the standard covering enclosures for electrical equipment, and it is made in the US. UL 50 plus the Type 3R designation is what an inspector looks for on an outdoor junction or pull box. Note that UL 50 addresses the enclosure itself, not the wiring method you run into it.
5) Is a screw cover box like this a problem if I need to get into it regularly?
It can be. The 18126 RTSC uses a screw-fastened flanged cover, which means loosening every screw each time you open it. That is fine for a pull box, splice point or a gutter you touch once a year. If technicians are in the box weekly for terminations or troubleshooting, a hinged-door enclosure with latches is the better choice. The screws on this one are plated for corrosion resistance outdoors.
6) What gauge steel is the 18126 RTSC, and will it hold up on an exterior wall?
The body is 16 gauge carbon steel, painted ANSI 61 grey. Sixteen gauge is standard commercial-duty for enclosures this size and takes conduit hubs and internal panel mounting without deforming. Because it is painted carbon steel rather than stainless or aluminum, keep it out of coastal salt air and chemical exposure, and touch up any field-drilled holes so bare steel is not left open to weather.
7) Will the ANSI 61 grey finish match the other enclosures already on my site?
ANSI 61 grey is the standard light grey used across most industrial control and enclosure lines, so an 18126 RTSC will sit next to existing panels and gutters without looking like an odd replacement. Useful if you are standardizing enclosures across a facility or adding to an existing run of B-Line boxes.
