1) Is this 12 x 12 wireway elbow suitable for outdoor or washdown locations?
No. The 1212 HSLSIDE carries a degree of protection of NEMA 1, which is indoor, dry location, general purpose only. For outdoor, wet or hosedown areas you need a NEMA 3R or NEMA 4/4X rated wireway fitting. Mixing a NEMA 1 elbow into an otherwise rated enclosure system voids the rating of the whole run.
2) What is the difference between a side opening 90 degree wireway elbow and a top or flat elbow?
A side opening 90 degree elbow turns the run horizontally, in the same plane as the wireway sides, so it is what you use to change direction along a wall. The 1212 HSLSIDE is that side opening type. A flat or top elbow changes direction across the wide face of the trough instead, for example carrying a run up a wall. Pick the elbow by which plane the turn happens in, not just the angle, or the conductors will not line up with the adjoining trough.
3) How heavy is a 12 x 12 steel wireway elbow, and do I need to support it?
