The 4412-12WT is a 4 x 4 inch cross section, 12 inches long. That 4 by 4 body is the standard gutter size for splicing and pulling conductors between panels or disconnects, and the 12 inch run is a short jumper length rather than a full wall-length gutter. Body steel is 14 gauge and the unit weighs 6.283 lb, so one person can hold it up while fastening.

It is built to NEMA 12, which covers dust, falling dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids indoors. That suits a plant floor, a machine shop or a mechanical room. It is not a wet-location or outdoor enclosure, so for hosedown or exterior work you want a NEMA 4 or 4X trough instead. The gasketing is a seamless poured in-place gasket and the cover clamps down with screw clamps.

It has welded external mounting feet, so it fastens flat to a wall or backboard without drilling through the enclosure body and breaking the NEMA 12 seal. You supply your own anchors or machine screws to suit the surface. Because the feet are external, the trough sits slightly off the wall rather than flush.

Hinged. The cover swings on heavy-duty hinges and is held shut with screw clamps, so it stays attached to the body when you open it up to pull or land conductors. For an electrician working alone overhead that matters, there is no loose lid to hold or drop. If your install needs a fully removable screw cover for access from the front, this is not that style.

It carries CSA C22.2 certification, which is what an inspector on a Canadian job will be looking for on a wireway or gutter. The enclosure is steel finished in gray.

The 4412-12WT is supplied as a seamless, gasketed NEMA 12 body, so conduit openings are made on site with a knockout punch or hole saw to match your raceway. Use watertight or dust-tight hubs and fittings at every penetration if you want to keep the NEMA 12 rating intact. The 14 gauge steel punches cleanly with a hydraulic or ratchet punch set.

With a 4 x 4 inch cross section the gross internal area is 16 square inches, and code limits wireway fill to 20 percent of cross section for conductors passing through, so you have roughly 3.2 square inches of conductor area to work with. Splices and taps are held to 75 percent of the cross-sectional area at that point. Size your bundle off the conductor area tables, not by eye.

Wiring troughs in this family are designed to be coupled end to end, and the 12 inch length is normally used as a short filler or jog between longer sections or between two panels. Any joint you make has to be punched and fitted with a coupling or connector, and every opening needs a dust-tight fitting to hold the NEMA 12 rating. Keep the 4 x 4 cross section consistent across the run so the mating faces line up.
