The 4436 HS trough is built to NEMA 4X, so it is intended for wet and corrosive-duty locations including hosedown and outdoor exposure. It is steel with an ANSI 61 gray finish and carries CSA C22.2 certification. For a dry indoor gutter run you would normally step down to a NEMA 1 screw-cover trough instead.

Hinged. The cover stays attached to the body when you open it, which matters on an overhead run where a loose cover is a dropped-object risk. It is secured shut with plated screws, so you need a driver to open it rather than latches or quarter-turns.

Eleven knockouts along the top and eleven along the bottom of the 36 inch body, so you can drop conduit into it from above and out the bottom at multiple points without drilling the enclosure. Punching extra openings yourself is what usually compromises the 4X rating, so plan your taps around the existing knockouts.

The 4436 HS mounts through holes in the back of the body, so fasteners pass through the trough wall into your wall, backboard, or strut. Anchors and screws are selected for the substrate and are not part of the trough. Because the mounting holes pierce the enclosure, use sealing washers or gasketed fasteners if you are relying on the NEMA 4X rating in a wet location.

It is 16 gauge steel, which is the usual body thickness for a 4 by 4 commercial wiring trough and stiff enough to run unsupported between mounting points on a wall. On a suspended or overhead run, support it on the thru holes at regular intervals rather than relying on the couplings.

ANSI 61 gray is the standard gray used across most commercial electrical enclosures, switchgear, and control panels, so a run of 4436 HS trough will read as the same color as the gear it feeds. Useful if you are standardizing a facility and want the gutter runs to disappear against the equipment.
