1) Is the Eaton CHF the same breaker as an Eaton BR two-pole?
No, and they are not interchangeable. CHF is built for Eaton Type CH loadcenters and plugs onto the CH bus. BR breakers fit BR-style panels and use a different bus connection. Putting the wrong family into a panel is not a listed installation. If your panel door label says Type CH, the CHF two-pole is the correct family; if it says BR, order a BR breaker instead.
2) What amperages does the Eaton CHF 2-pole breaker come in?
Eight ratings across the CHF 2-pole range: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 amps, all at 120/240V. For a 240V load like a water heater, dryer or condensing unit, the two-pole configuration breaks both hot legs at once. Part numbers follow the amperage directly, so a 30A is CHF230 and a 50A is CHF250.
3) Is a 10 kAIC breaker enough for my service, or do I need a higher interrupt rating?
The CHF series is rated 10,000 AIC. That covers the great majority of residential and light commercial services fed from a typical utility transformer. Where the available fault current at the panel exceeds 10 kA, usually a large commercial service or a panel close to a big transformer, 10 kAIC is not adequate and you need a higher-interrupting breaker. The engineer's fault current study or the utility's available fault current letter is what settles it.
4) Can I use an Eaton CHF breaker on an air conditioner or heat pump circuit?
Yes. The CHF 2-pole is HACR rated, which is the qualification for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment branch circuits where the nameplate calls for a HACR type breaker. Size it to the maximum overcurrent protection printed on the equipment nameplate, not to the wire alone.
5) What is the difference between the standard, switching neutral and shunt trip versions of the CHF 2-pole?
Three build options on the same breaker. Standard is a plain two-pole breaker for a 240V load. Switching neutral (SW suffix, as in CHF230SW) adds a neutral pole so the neutral conductor is disconnected along with the hots, which is what you want when the circuit has to be fully isolated for service. Shunt trip (ST suffix, as in CHF220ST) adds a coil that trips the breaker remotely from a control signal, used for emergency shutdown, elevator power shutdown and fire alarm interlocks. Clamshell pack (CS suffix) is the same breaker in retail clamshell packaging rather than bulk.
6) Which CHF 2-pole amperages are available with shunt trip?
Shunt trip is offered on the 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 amp CHF two-pole breakers, ordered with the ST suffix (CHF215ST through CHF250ST). If you are wiring an elevator shunt trip or a fire alarm interlock, order the ST version up front. A shunt trip coil is factory-built into the breaker and cannot be added to a standard CHF later.
7) Which CHF 2-pole breakers have a switching neutral?
Switching neutral is available from 15A through 50A on the CHF two-pole, carrying the SW suffix (CHF225SW, CHF230SW, CHF235SW, CHF240SW, CHF245SW, CHF250SW among them). Use it where code or the equipment requires the grounded conductor to open with the ungrounded ones, for example some sign circuits and service disconnect applications. Standard CHF breakers land the neutral on the panel neutral bar instead and do not switch it.
8) Can a CHF 2-pole breaker be used to feed a 120V circuit?
The CHF two-pole is a 120/240V device. Across both poles it serves a 240V load; the 120V half of the rating is what makes it legal on a 120/240V single phase system where one leg to neutral is 120V. If you need two separate 120V branch circuits, a two-pole breaker is the wrong part unless you are intentionally feeding a multi-wire branch circuit with a common trip, which is exactly what a two-pole does provide.
9) How can I tell if an Eaton CHF breaker has actually tripped?
