Crouse-Hinds APJ6485 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which Crouse-Hinds Arktite APJ plug do I order for a 3-phase 480V motor connection with a ground?
For a 3-phase feed plus an equipment ground you want the 4-wire, 5-pole version, APJ6585. The 3-wire, 4-pole APJ6485 covers three current-carrying conductors plus ground on a 3-phase system without neutral, and the 2-wire, 3-pole APJ6385 is for single-phase with ground. All three are rated 60A at 600 Vac/250 Vdc, so 480V 3-phase is within rating.
2) What does Style 2 grounding mean on the Arktite APJ plug, and does it matter for matching a receptacle?
Style 2 is the grounding configuration of the plug, and it has to match the Arktite receptacle or connector body it mates with. Mixing grounding styles will not interchange, so when you add receptacles to an existing APJ installation, specify Style 2 along with the same 60A rating and the same pole/wire count as your plug.
3) Is the Crouse-Hinds APJ plug suitable for outdoor use where it gets rained on?
It carries a NEMA 4 rating, which means protection against dust, dirt and water ingress, so it holds up outdoors and in washdown-adjacent areas. The body is copper-free aluminum, which is what you want where corrosion and sparking matter. It is still a non-hazardous-location device.
4) Will a 60A Arktite APJ plug work on a 400 Hz power system for aircraft ground support?
Yes. The APJ plug is rated 50 to 400 Hz, so it covers standard 50/60 Hz utility power and 400 Hz systems used in aviation ground support and specialized equipment, up to 600 Vac.
5) Can I use the APJ 60A plug on a DC system?
Yes, up to 250 Vdc. The plug is rated 600 Vac/250 Vdc, so DC applications are limited to 250 volts even though the AC rating is 600.
