Order by the large size first, then the size you are stepping down to.
2) Can I use this reducer on IMC, or is it rigid conduit only?
Both. The reducer is built for rigid and intermediate metal conduit systems, and since IMC and rigid share the same NPT thread standard, the same fitting threads onto either one.
3) Is this conduit reducer approved for a hazardous or classified area?
No. It is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a Class I or Class II classified area you need a fitting specifically listed for that division, not this one.
4) Will a conduit reducer pass inspection on a commercial job?
The Crouse-Hinds iron reducer is built to NEC and CEC requirements, so it is acceptable for code-compliant rigid and IMC work in ordinary locations. Inspectors generally want to see a threaded fitting of the correct trade sizes, fully engaged and wrenched tight, which is what the NPT ends on both sides give you.
5) What is the difference between a conduit reducer and a reducing bushing?
A reducer is a two-ended threaded coupling: female NPT on the large side, female NPT on the small side, used to join two runs of different trade size. A reducing bushing instead threads male into a larger hub or enclosure opening and accepts the smaller conduit. If you are tying 3 inch rigid to 2 inch rigid mid-run, the reducer (290M for 3 to 2-1/2, 289 for 3 to 2) is the piece you want; if you are landing a small conduit in an oversized box hub, you want a bushing.
6) Does this reducer maintain the equipment grounding path through the conduit?
Iron body with NPT threads on both ends gives a metal-to-metal threaded joint, which is how rigid and IMC systems carry the ground continuity the NEC relies on. Thread the joint up tight; a loose or partially engaged reducer is the usual cause of a failed continuity check.
7) Can I thread this reducer onto EMT?
No. EMT is not threaded, so an NPT reducer will not land on it. These reducers are for rigid and IMC conduit. To transition from EMT you need an EMT connector or coupling into a threaded hub first, then the reducer on the threaded side.
8) Is an iron conduit reducer OK outdoors or in a damp industrial area?
The body is iron, which holds up in demanding commercial and industrial electrical work, and the threaded NPT joints make a tight connection. For wet or corrosive exposure, trades normally dress the threads with a conductive, corrosion-inhibiting compound at assembly. In severely corrosive chemical environments a PVC-coated or non-ferrous fitting is the better choice.
