1) What motor full load amps does the Eaton FH08 heater coil cover?
The FH08 heater element is sized for motor nameplate full load currents of .43 to .46A and .49 to .53A on ambient-compensated Type A/B relays, and .40 to .43A and .49 to .52A on non-compensated relays. Pick the coil off the FLA stamped on the motor nameplate, not off the breaker or the horsepower rating.
2) How many FH08 heaters do I need for a three-phase motor?
Three. A three-phase starter takes three FH08 heater coils, one per pole. A single-phase motor takes two. Order the quantity to match, since a missing element leaves a leg unprotected.
3) My motor nameplate reads 0.6 FLA. Can I still use the FH08?
No. The FH08 tops out at .53A on an ambient-compensated relay and .52A non-compensated. A 0.6A motor needs the next heater coil up in the Eaton FH series; sizing a coil below the motor's FLA will nuisance trip the overload.
4) Will an FH08 heater work in an IEC overload relay?
No. The FH08 is a NEMA-design heater element for Eaton Type A and Type B overload relays on size 0, 1, and 2 starters. IEC contactors and their overload blocks use adjustable current-setting dials rather than replaceable heater coils, so there is nothing to install it into.
5) Does the FH08 give thermal overload protection or fast trip?
Both. The FH08 element is rated for thermal and fast trip operation, protecting a motor at a 40 degree C rise with a 1.15 service factor. That covers a standard continuous-duty motor nameplated at 1.15 SF.
6) Is the Eaton FH08 heater UL Listed for use in a motor control panel?
The FH08 heater element is UL Listed. That is the only listing carried on it, so if your facility spec calls for a specific panel or enclosure rating, that comes from the starter and enclosure, not from the heater coil.
7) Does the current range change depending on whether my overload relay is ambient compensated?
Yes, and it matters when you order. On an ambient-compensated relay the FH08 covers .43-.46A and .49-.53A; on a non-compensated relay it covers .40-.43A and .49-.52A. Check which relay is in the starter bucket before matching the coil to the motor nameplate.
8) How big is an Eaton FH08 heater element?
Small enough to stock a drawer of them: 2.1 in by 1.3 in by 0.8 in and about 0.03 lb. Facilities standardizing a motor fleet often keep several FLA ranges on the shelf, since the coil is matched to each motor's nameplate current rather than to the starter.
