Eaton FH11 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What motor full load amps does the Eaton FH11 heater coil cover?
The FH11 heater element is sized for very small motor currents. On a Type A (ambient compensated) overload relay it covers 0.56 to 0.62 A and 0.65 to 0.71 A; on a non-compensated relay it covers 0.52 to 0.57 A and 0.64 to 0.70 A. Pick the coil off the full load current printed on the motor nameplate, not off the breaker or the wire size.
2) How many FH11 heaters do I need for a three phase motor starter?
Three. A three-phase starter takes three heater coils, one per pole, and a single-phase starter takes two. Order the quantity to match, all the same FH11 rating.
3) Which Eaton starter sizes does the FH11 heater pack fit?
The FH11 is used with NEMA starter sizes 0, 1 and 2, on Type A and Type B overload relays. It is a NEMA-design heater, so it is not a part for IEC-style starters with adjustable dial overloads.
4) My motor draws 1.5 amps. Can I use the FH11 heater?
No. The FH11 tops out around 0.71 A on an ambient compensated relay and 0.70 A non-compensated, so a 1.5 A motor would trip the overload immediately. You need a higher-rated heater from the same Eaton H-series table for that nameplate current.
5) Will the FH11 heater protect a motor with a 1.15 service factor?
Yes. FH11 heater coils are rated to protect a motor with a 40 degree C rise and a 1.15 service factor. If your motor nameplate shows a 1.0 service factor or a different temperature rise, the trip point will not line up the same way and you should size the coil accordingly.
6) Is the FH11 a thermal overload heater or a fast trip type?
Both. The FH11 is listed as thermal and fast trip, so it gives the normal thermal overload curve plus faster response on a hard fault such as a locked rotor or stalled motor.
7) Does the overload relay type change which FH11 current range I use?
Yes, it does. The same FH11 element reads differently depending on the relay it sits in: ambient compensated ranges are 0.56-0.62 A and 0.65-0.71 A, while non-compensated ranges are 0.52-0.57 A and 0.64-0.70 A. Confirm whether your starter uses a Type A or Type B overload block before matching the motor nameplate current.
