1) Will the Eaton FDB2040 breaker work on a 480V three-phase panel?
The FDB2040 is rated 600 Vac and 250 Vdc, so it can be applied at 480 Vac, but check the available fault current first. Its interrupting rating drops with voltage: 18 kAIC at 240 Vac and only 14 kAIC at 480 Vac. If your 480V system fault current exceeds 14 kA at that point, you need a higher-interrupting F-frame breaker instead. It is a two-pole breaker, so on a three-phase panel it serves two-pole loads only.
2) Is the FDB2040 a complete breaker or just a frame I have to add a trip unit to?
It ships as a complete molded case circuit breaker, so no trip unit, handle or accessory has to be ordered separately to make it functional. The trip is fixed thermal and fixed magnetic, meaning there is nothing to dial in or adjust in the field at 40 amps.
3) Can I use the FDB2040 to replace an existing Eaton FD-frame 40A two-pole breaker?
FDB2040 is an F-frame, Series C, FDB-type two-pole breaker rated 40A. It is a direct match for an F-frame two-pole 40A position in the same Series C equipment. The one thing to verify is interrupting rating: the FDB type gives 18 kAIC at 240 Vac and 14 kAIC at 480 Vac, and if the breaker you are pulling out was a higher-AIC F-frame type, you have to match or exceed that rating rather than step down.
4) Does the Eaton FDB2040 come with lugs on both ends?
Terminals are supplied on the load side. Plan the line-side connection accordingly, whether that is bus stabs in the panel or separately ordered line-side terminals for a standalone enclosure mounting.
5) How much space do I need in the enclosure for an Eaton FDB2040?
The breaker measures 6 in height, 3.38 in length and 2.75 in width, and weighs 3 lb. Those are the numbers to use when laying out a small enclosure or checking gutter space, along with whatever bending room your conductors need at the load terminals.
